Terrific Lineup Set for the Edinburgh International Swim Meet

The lineup set to hit the pool at the Edinburgh International Swim Meet this weekend is an impressive one as many of the competitors will be using the competition as preparation for the British National Championships and trials next month.

“The timing of the event is perfect in terms of the race strategy implemented by British Swimming. At just four weeks out from the trials it gives the athletes one last hit out,” Bill Furniss, the Head Coach of British Swimming told the Uttoxeter News.

“The programme includes Olympic and skins events and these will provide athletes with the opportunity to race their main events as well as a training situation for the sprinters.

“With a strong contingent of British athletes it guarantees there is a good competitive standard to the meet.”

As SwimSwam outlined in a post in January Scottish Swimming was more than excited to reintroduce this meet in its newest format, which will be held at the refurbished Royal Commonwealth Pool.

The meet will feature all of the Olympic events, in addition to the 50’s of each stroke and the 4x50m mixed freestyle and medley relays. The meet also features “skins” in all of the 50m events. The fastest 8 swimmers will advance to the knock-out stages, and those races will decide the winners. More than £7,500 in cash prizes will be awarded for the top 3 finishers in every event. There will also be a larger cash prize awarded to the top male and female swimmers with the most FINA points earned for an individual swim.

Some of the match ups in this meet will make for exciting racing, especially in the skins competitions.

The men’s breaststroke events are filled with quality competition with the 50 and the 100 events including Adam Peaty, Ross Murdoch, Fabio Scozzoli, Caba Siladji and Giacomo Perez Dortona. Michael Jamieson and Andrew Willis will also be included in the 100 and race the 200 which also includes Peaty and Murdoch.

Fran Halsall and Natalie Coughlin will battle each other for the gold in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. The two will also face each other along with Georgia Davies in the women’s 50 backstroke.

Anthony Ervin and Ben Proud will go head to head in both the men’s 50 and 100 freestyle events.

While the women’s 200 IM should also be a fantastic race involving Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Hannah Miley and Aimee Willmott.
