Summer McIntosh had a notable weekend of racing in Austin, clocking the #2 400 Free ever and the #4 200 Fly ever. Just before the US Open this weekend, McIntosh was in Colorado Springs with the rest of Bob Bowman’s pro group at a 24-day altitude training camp. Even though the Canadian superstar is no stranger to altitude training, she said this 10-workout per week camp “got us in shape very quickly”.

I still question Summer’s move to Bob Bowman don’t get me wrong Bob is a great coach but he has a stable. Summer Mcintosh was Fred Vergnoux’s Project.

We’ll get downvoted massively here, but I also scratch my head on this one. Why fix what ain’t broke? But I accept the argument that perhaps the ceiling with His Bobness is higher.

Perhaps.

Fred Vergoux’s project vs Bob Bowman group? the answer coming soon…

I dont know one way or the other byt maybe she didn’t want to live in Europe? Summer is going to make any coach look great and there are a handful of world class programs she could have considered (maybe 5?). Perhaps she just chose the best program that also met her personal requirements.

Caleb

by that reasoning why go train with Fred? She was there like 4 months.

I wondered about that as well. Being 19, I think training in Austin serves Summer well socially and she seems very happy there. Her family is close-knit and they seem to make their decisions very strategically, so they must have seen this as the right call. But I loved Summer’s progress and drive with Fred. I still hope she does training blocks with him from time to time.

I think training in a college/pro group is better than with high schoolers

Perhaps because training at isolated European altitude camps halfway around the world from home sounds less appealing than collaborating with her international competitors and friends in Austin.

Her BR was best with Brent.

Would love to see her try more 200 Back and 200 Free soon.

I know the college athletes are taken care of, but it still seems odd that the pro/international group gets a three-week Colorado block while the college team is left home without their head coach. Didn’t the OTC used to prioritize U.S. athletes?

OTC gives priority to money, just like everywhere and anyone else in the USA

I saw someone comment on a different article/video saying that foreign athletes are allowed to train at the US OTC, however, they or their country have to pay a fee. Is this true?

Yes. The USOPTC is open to just about anyone, for a fee. You and I could go train there, for a fee.

The USOPTC (and the USOPC) does not receive any direct federal funding, though one could argue they receive sort of indirect funding in that they were given the Olympic trademark and, in essence, anti-trust protections.

There are some priorities and rates that USA swimming (and other US NGOs) get that say, even the Texas pro group, do not get.

Her results are even more impressive when you remember she was sick and dealing with that and out of the pool for a stretch this fall.

Alex definitely should join their group and do something different.

Let’s be honest, Alex has achieved a lot, but in terms of talent, Alex is not on the same level as Gretchen and Kate Douglas.

People fail to realise this. She is very good but is still overestimated.

Always funny that athletes get criticized for “overcoverage” and being “overestimated.” They just swim. As a 5-time NCAA champion and one of the best college swimmers ever, Alex’s legacy is secure. She is a very good LCM swimmer, obviously, but not yet at the very tip top of the pyramid. Believe it or not, that is not an easy place to be.

Yeah, like you, checks notes, I estimate her to be an individual Olympic medalist and one of the best college swimmers ever.

There is still more for her to achieve!

Agreed – her entire support system is at UVA, and something like that is hard to give up. I wonder what more people are expecting from her? She has Olympics silver, WC gold. Her path to another gold internationally is extremely tough having to get by Summer and Kate in the 2 IM, Kate and Chikunova in the 2 Breast
