One of the big showdowns to look for will be in the 800 freestyle final. McIntosh is likely to be going head-to-head with American distance star Katie Ledecky. McIntosh comes into the meet less than a second off of Ledecky’s world record and is the second seed behind her in the event. It is the only event on McIntosh’s program where she is not the top seed.
McIntosh heads into the meet leading the entry lists in the 400 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 200 IM, and 400 IM. It’s a testament to her all-around ability and prowess across strokes and distances. Her program will test both her speed and endurance with multiple double-event days and short recovery time between rounds as well.
We don’t know which relays McIntosh will choose to race; the 4×200 free relays and 4×100 medley are likely Canada’s best shots at medals.
With such a broad lineup and being the top seed in four of her five events, McIntosh is one of the most highly anticipated swimmers going into the meet and could be a key to the overall Canadian result in Singapore.

Great interview between Brittany McLean and Fred Vergnoux. Hot take: He thinks Summer could be the first woman under 8:00 in the long course. I wish she’d stay in Antibes with his training group.
Yes, the interview had been noted and discussed in earlier comments where it was commented that Vergnoux is very inaccurate (perhaps intentionally?) about the number of times McIntosh has swum the 800 Free (he says just “4 or 5 times” when the actual number is 23 times, beginning at the age of 9 and at the 2021 Olympics). And it was noted that Vergnoux’s remarks about the “emotionality” of “the Latin population” and the relative number of times he has hugged Spaniard Mireia Belmonte and the “young” “shy” “innocent” Canadian Summer McIntosh are quite offensive on a couple of different levels.
It is true that since she has made her debut on the international scene – say in 2021 @ Tokyo Olympics, she has not really swam the 800 FR. 4-5 times, and always only swam it once ( didnt make the final in Tokyo). English is not his first language – and he is not a gen z guy… clumsy maybe but not inappropriate.
Summer will beat ledecky in both the 400 and 800 world records in both
I’m very glad Summer has such strong family support surrounding her. May they continue to protect her and may she continue to enjoy her swimming career while pursuing her athletic goals.♡
Pity no 4×200!
No need to as Canada won’t medal. Best to let others gain experience.
Crazy schedule.
Literally the hardest schedule I’ve seen at World Championship or Olympics.
Yeah, swimming twice as much as Ledecky. I’m worried she’ll be exhausted for the 800.
Just completing the 800 in a top time with the schedule Summer has taken on would be a great feat. I find it getting tiresome with the constant comparison to KL. They are such different swimmers. KL swims only one stroke and she is 10 years older. I see Summer more as the ladies’ version of Michael Phelps. There is no swimmer on the women’s side who can match Summer’s versatility and race load.
Mireia Belmonte used to swim all that plus 1500. And she did it three times, which is another level of insanity.
And one time she apparently added open water 5k to it.
But was her career shortened because of injuries? I don’t know what happened to her. Maybe taking all that on isn’t always a good thing.
She had some really off years due to shoulder bursitis, but overall her career was longer then one would usually expect from a female distance swimmer. She was 0.23 second off bronze in 400 IM in Tokyo 2021, which is pretty impressive at 30 years old, I think.
Maybe she could have had more medals if she focused on a subset of her events after her shoulder issues first surfaced in 2015 or so, but maybe she just enjoyed swimming this schedule for the sake of it.
I can’t see her doing the 4×1 free on the 27th. I know she’s a remarkable athlete but I believe it’s the first time she will be attempting 2 individual events in 1 day. Although she has certainly often surprised us with her endurance.
Also with Penny O out Canada’s chances for a medal in 4x 1 are nil barring a dq from other team(s)
The question is probably, how many world records is she going to get
Wow, July 27 is going to be a monster of a day.
