2025 World University Games/Summer Universiade – Swimming
- July 17th-23rd, 2025
- Berlin, Germany
- Long Course Meters (50m)
Swimming begins on July 17 at the 2025 World University Games/Summer Universiade in Berlin, Germany. The biennial, multi-sport event pits the best university athletes around the world against each other in the spirit of international cooperation and camaraderie. To be eligible, athletes must have been born between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2007 (ages can range from 17 to 25 as of the start of swimming), and have taken at least one course and be progressing toward a degree or diploma at an accredited post-secondary academic institution. There is no requirement of amateur status.
At the last Universiade in Chengdu, China, in 2023, the host nation topped the medal table with 18 golds. The depth of the Chinese roster was largely in part due to the participation of swimmers like Li Bingjie, Qin Haiyang, and Zhang Yufei, who all competed shortly after their strong performances at the 2023 World Championships.
Italy finished second in the medal table with 31 total medals (8 gold, 10 silver, 13 bronze), the most total medals out of any nation competing by a landslide. Poland had a strong meet with a third-place finish in the medal table, accumulating 15 total medals (6 gold, 7 silver, 2 bronze).
Team USA will be looking to recapture its dominance and return to the top of the medal table after a sixth-place finish in 2023, when a funding decision by USA Swimming forced athletes to self-fund, reducing the size and strength of the team.
At the 2017 edition, the last one held before the 2021 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19, Team USA emerged victorious. They topped the medals table in Taiwan by winning 11 gold, 9 silver, and 8 bronze medals for 28 total. Japan was close behind with 9 golds, followed by Italy with 5 golds and Russia with 2 golds.
