The 2025 European Short Course Championships saw the women’s 200m IM final unfold with on-fire Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands scorching her third European Record of the competition.
25-year-old Steenbergen roared her way to the wall in a monster effort of 2:01.83, beating the pack by nearly 3 seconds en route to gold.
The next-closest swimmer was Ellen Walshe of Ireland who produced 2:04.78 as the silver medalist, while Israeli national record holder Anastasia Gorbenko notched 2:05.32 for bronze.
As for Steenbergen, her incredible feat shaved .03 seconds off the long-standing European Record of 2:01.86, which Hungarian Olympic icon Katinka Hosszu had established at the 2014 Short Course World Championships.
Additionally, Steenbergen’s effort was just .20 outside of American Kate Douglass‘ World Record of 2:01.63 put on the books at last year’s Short Course World Championships.
Entering this competition, Steenbergen’s lifetime best rested at the 2:04.94 national record she logged at the 2022 SC Worlds, so she blasted over 3 seconds off that time to make history in this event.

Steenbergen’s time tonight now renders her the #2 performer, only behind Douglass.
This is remarkably Steenbergen’s third European Record of these Championships. The Olympian previously established new ER marks in the 200 freestyle (1:50.33) and 100m IM (56.26).
Steenbergen is set to take on the 100m free later in this session.

Marrit Steenbergen has been absolutely on fire so far in Lublin, and she remains perfect with European Records in the women’s 200 IM final, touching in 2:01.83 to take down Katinka Hosszu’s record of 2:01.86 that was set 11-years-ago today.
Steenbergen’s swim was also the 2nd fastest performance in history in the event, with only Kate Douglass’s World Record swim of 2:01.63 coming in ahead of her.

She was out in 1st from the very beginning turning nearly two tenths ahead of Tamara Potocka at the 25 meter mark. From there, she only extended her lead to ultimately finish nearly three seconds ahead of the field.

Ireland’s Ellen Walshe finished 2nd in 2:04.78, just three hundredths off her Irish record time of 2:04.75 from the 2025 World Cup series.
Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko grabbed the bronze medal in 2:05.32, about four tenths off her national record 2:04.93 also from the World Cup.
A class lady. Marrit never ceases to amaze.
That big of a drop makes me think that world record might be hers in the near future. Clearly she has a high ceiling if she can slash 3 seconds off like that.
