The 2nd day of the 2025 Summer Sectional in Novato, CA saw Stanford’s Emily Thompson win the women’s 200 free in 2:02.64. Thompson is primarily an IM’er and flyer, and her performance in the 200 free last night marked a huge career best. She entered the meet with a career mark of 2:05.25, which she had set back in 2023. Of note, coming in 2nd was San Ramon Valley Aquatics 14-year-old Mikayla Tan, who popped a 2:04.48. That swim also marked a huge personal best for the young Tan, who came into the meet with a PB of 2:06.63.
USC’s Cole Ballard won the men’s 200 free in 1:52.92, marking his first time under 1:53 in the event.
In the women’s 400 IM, Harvard’s Stephanie Iannaccone, who is competing for Walnut Creek Aquabears, swam a 4:55.49 to win the race by 3 seconds. Iannaccone was just off her career best of 4:54.65. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Zadie Schatz from Stamford Sailfish Aquatic Club took 2nd last night in 4:58.42. That performance marks a huge career best, as Schatz entered the day with a PB of 5:11.32, which she swam back in May.
UC San Diego’s Bekzhan Yessengeldy won the men’s 400 IM in 4:32.19, taking a second off his previous best of 4:33.78. Yessengeldy was exceptional on the breaststroke leg of the race, where he split 1:15.25.
The women’s 100 back saw Emily Thompson back in action, and she picked up yet another win. Thompson posted a 1:03.13, which is a bit off her personal best of 1:01.56. USC’s Lindsay Barnes was 2nd in 1:03.48, while Rancho San Dieguito’s Claire O’Mara, just 14 years old, came in 3rd with a 1:04.81.
Another Rancho San Dieguito swimmer, 17-year-old Darmen Yessengeldy, won the men’s 100 back in 59.10. The younger Yessengeldy was a touch off his personal best of 58.58.
