The 2025 Speedo Sectional meet in Novato, CA kicked off yesterday at the Miwok Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Stanford’s Emily Thompson popped a new career best in the women’s 100 free last night, winning the event in 56.61. With the performance, Thompson clipped her previous career best of 56.97, which she swam at YMCA LC Nationals last summer. Thompson’s most recent meet before this weekend was US Nationals early last month, where she was terrific, establishing new career bests in the 200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM.

Behind Thompson, 15-year-old Stella Canoles out of Orinda Aquatics came in a close 2nd with a 56.85. That was a strong swim for Canoles, though it was off her lofty career best of 55.73, which she swam in a time trial at US Nationals last month. Also of note, 38-year-old Brooke Boak came in 3rd last night with a 57.16.

The men’s 100 free saw Stanford’s Rafael Gu win, making it a sweep for the Cardinal. Gu clocked a 50.17, marking a new personal best for the 21-year-old. He clipped his previous mark of 50.30, which he swam back in the summer of 2023. Last night, Gu was out fast, splitting 23.88 on the opening 50, then paid for that early speed a bit on the back half, but still managed to come home in 26.24.

In the women’s 200 breast, 13-year-old Zadie Schatz from Stamford Sailfish Aquatic Club in Connecticut won, swimming a 2:36.44. It was a phenomenal performance for the youngster, who entered the meet with a personal best of 2:37.49, a time which she swam last month. She had some very solid early speed last night, splitting 1:14.55 on the opening 100, so we’ll be looking out for her in the 100 breast later in this meet as well.

Aquasol Swim Team 18-year-old Cruz Lopez won the men’s 200 breast in 2:18.94 last night. The swim was a new career best for Lopez, marking his first time under 2:19 in the event. His previous best of 2:19.57 was set last month.

Lauren Fanucchi, a 16-year-old out of Alto Swim Club, won the women’s 200 fly in 2:18.38. That marks yet another winner who clocked a career best en route to their victory last night. Fanucchi entered the meet with a personal best of 2:19.67, which she swam at the end of May.

USC’s Cole Ballard won the men’s 200 fly in 2:03.75, marking his first time under 2:05 in the event.

The distance events on the day were the women’s 1500 free and the men’s 800 free. Wolverine Aquatics 17-year-old Kingsley Rosevold won the women’s 1500 free decisively with a 17:23.67. She was the only swimmer in the field to go under 18 minutes last night. Garic Shao, a 17-year-old out of Alto Swim Club, won the men’s 800 free in 8:24.55.
