St. Bonaventure Men and Women Come up Short against Pittsburgh

Despite setting two pool records at the Reilly Center Pool, the St. Bonaventure men’s swimming and diving team came up short this afternoon to Pittsburgh.

SBU started the meet strong with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.  Vatslav LetsMatthew SchuttJimmy Martin and Viacheslav Shchukin broke a pool record with a time of 1:33.49.  Shchukin kept the momentum going with a first place finish in the in the 100- yard freestyle with a time of 45.73.
The Bonnies had two sets of first and second place finishes on the day. The first came in the 100-yard backstroke with Michael Pilyugin finishing first (51.70) and Shchukin close behind with a time of 51.79.
 David Paccapaniccia and Martin finished one-two in the 50-yard freestyle only half a second behind one another. Martin had a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.06) followed closely by Alex Rodenkirk (1:43.17) of Pitt.  Lets placed third in the event with a time of 1:43.64.
Matt Goettler out touched his teammate Michael Burud by nine tenths of a second claim a second place finish for the Bonnies.
Michael White and Matt Rochna both helped the Bonnies out with third place finishes.  White finished with a time of 1:58.18 in the 200- yard individual medley. Rochna fished with a time of 52.11 in the 100- yard fly.
Pilyugin, Shchukin, Paccapaniccia and Martin came out on top in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.56.  The Bonnies set their second pool record of the day in this event.
The Bonnies will be back in the pool again tomorrow, (Oct. 20) at the Clarion Invitational in Clarion, Pa.

St. Bonaventure Women’s Swimming and Diving

The St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving team suffered their first loss at home to Pitt on Saturday. The Bonnies were paced by Shannon Haberman and Tanja Kirmse.

Sophomore Shannon Haberman earned SBU their first top three finish of the afternoon in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10.39.38, just ahead of teammate Erin Cervone. Haberman would earn her second top three finish later in the meet in the 500 yard freestyle by recording a time of 5:16.76, which also placed her third in the event.

Freshman Tanja Kirmse led all Bonnies with three top-three finishes, her first coming in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.54, earning her a second place finish. Kirmse would secure a first place finish in the 200 yard butterfly touching in with a time of 2:05.67, almost three seconds ahead of Pittsburgh’s Veronica Lee. Teammate Lauren Caldwell  earned a third place finish. Kirmse’s final victory would come in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.35 seconds, just edging out Melissa Pocsai of Pitt, and giving her a first place finish.

The Bonnies would have one top relay finish with the team of Dietrich, Bull, Anderson, and Kirmse in the 200 yard freestyle relay. They finished with a time of 1:41.53 earning them a third place finish.

Freshman Meghan Bartlett earned the Bonnies their lone top finish in the diving portion of today’s meet by recording a third place finish in the 3 meter dive.

Bonnies senior Mackenzie Courtney recorded a time of 1:10.18 in the 100 yard breaststroke, enough for a third place finish. Elizabeth Malone also contributed a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.23.

The Bonnies return to the pool tomorrow (Oct. 20) at the Clarion Invite in Clarion, P.A.
