South Dakota State Sweeps Iowa Central At Home

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State swim and dive program passed Iowa Central Community College on Saturday with the men winning 155-107 and the women winning 199-50 over the Tritons.

Elisabeth Timmer once again led the women, this time taking home three place finishes and one second. Timmer anchored the winning 200 medley relay to a 1:48.34 finish, took the top spot in the 100 back with a 59.47 and first in the 100 fly with a 59.82. She anchored the 200 free relay to a second place finish with a 24.01 split.

Emily Pincus found her own share of success back in the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool with double wins in the 1000 free (10:38.32) and 100 free (54.53). She would swim the third leg of Timmer’s 200 free relay, contributing a 25.24 split for a second place finish.

Taking home four wins (two relay, two individual), Emma Walz swam backstroke for the first place 200 medley relay that finished in 1:48.34, won the 50 free with a 24.77, the 200 back with a 2:07.18 and the 200 free relay where she swam the opening leg in a 25.06 split.

Alyssa Eckstein earned three wins with her breaststroke split of 31.24 to lead the Jacks 200 medley relay with a 1:51.70, won the 200 fly with a 2:13.18 and came in first in the 400 IM with a 4:40.21 and the 200 free relay as the third leg, finishing in a 25.37 split.

On the men’s side, Marcus Benson scored 12 points for the Jacks with a win as a member of the 200 medley relay where he swam the backstroke in a 25.36 split. He came in first in the 100 back after swimming a 54.57 and picked up a third place finish in the 200 back (2:03.51) and fourth in the 200 free relay’s third leg (1:31.54/22.90).

Alex Kraft took three first place finishes on the day with the 200 free (1:46.35), 500 free (4:56.06) and the200 free relay (1:27.60/21.62). He also came in second in the 50 free with a 21.93.

Quenten Steffen swam breast and took first in the men’s 200 medley relay (1:38.22), took second in the 200 breast with a 2:11.86, and finished third in the 400 IM (4:26.97) and the 100 break (1:01.51)

Cody Watkins took home a win in the 200 medley relay swimming fly in a split of 23.29 and grabbed three runner-up titles in the 100 breast (1:00.56), 100 fly (53.34) and the 200 free relay (1:28.19).

Also coming up big for the Jacks in scoring was Damon Venner, who grabbed a win in the 100 fly with a 53.61. He finished third in the 100 fly after swimming a 53.61, finished fourth as the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay and finished fifth (4:34.40) in the 400 IM.

The women will face Omaha at home on March 6. NCAA Zone Diving Championships are scheduled for the following day in Lexington, Ken.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Kyle McKenzie continues to add to his growing resume, setting a new pool record here Saturday at a dual meet with South Dakota State.

McKenzie broke the 400 individual medley record at the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool, which has been used for 11 years. He finished in 4:06.38, winning by 12 seconds.

The victory was one of three for McKenzie on the day, as teammate Johnathon Turner matched him with three first place finishes.

McKenzie also won the 100 breaststroke in 59.08 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.99. Turner claimed the 50 free in 21.86, the 100 free in 48.89 and the 100 butterfly in 53.30.

Andrew Iverson was first in the 1000 in 10:10.48, finishing ahead of the runner-up by eight seconds and bettering his seed time by 13 seconds. Tjeerd Van Stein added a gold in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.9.

“Kyle’s time is third-best on our school’s Top-10 list,” Iowa Central head coach Joe Plane said. “And Andrew’s 1000 free is his best-ever non-tapered time.”

Second place finishes came courtesy of Van Stein in the 100 back (54.9), Gerard Ijspeert in the 200 free (1:49.2), Javier Santiago in the 200 butterfly (2:04.1) and Magali Mouton in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.23).

Lexi Mast was third in the 100 backstroke (1:04.31) and Mouton third in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.4). The men’s medley also finished third in 1:41.39.

“We had a very good two weeks of practice with this past week being very hard,” Plane said. “The kids stepped up and competed well against Div. I competition.”

The Tritons compete next at Barton on Saturday, March 6.
