BUFFALO, NY – The Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College in Buffalo, New York has been kind to Siena Swimming & Diving during the team’s last two trips to the pool. The Saints continued their 2022-23 season by taking dual meet wins over MAAC foe Canisius (166-128) and the University of Rochester (211-85) on Saturday afternoon.

Siena defeated the Golden Griffins in dual meet action for the first time since 2012, while taking a victory over Rochester for the second straight year. The Saints have now won three of its first four dual meet events for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. The Green and Gold returned to the site of both last year and this year’s MAAC Championship meet, which saw them post their best finish since 2016 last spring.

Siena claimed six events during the meet, with seniors Rory Kalac and Reilly King winning two individual events each. Kalac posted the best time in the MAAC thus far this season in the 50 free (24.26) and also won the 100 free (53.49), while King dominated freestyle distance swims with wins in the 500 free (5:22.81) and the 1000 free (11:05.13). The Saints also took home a pair of relay victories, with the group of freshman Brooke Pociask (back), freshman Tori Spacciapolli (breast), senior Jessica Shine (fly), and Kalac (free) winning the 200 medley relay (1:50.15), and the team of sophomore Kylie Carter, freshman Kaci Owens, sophomore Maddie Buck, and Kalac posting the MAAC’s best mark this season in the 400 free relay.

The Saints displayed depth in several events, with King, freshman Jillian Walls and senior Lauren Ostrander taking the top three spots in the 500 free, Kalac, Carter, Owens, and sophomore Shaylea Triller making up the top-four finishers in the 50 free, Carter, Buck and Ostrander going for first, third, and fourth in the 200 free, and Kalac, Carter, Owens, and Triller finishing, first, third, fourth, and fifth in the 100 free.

The Green and Gold also swam an impressive 14 best times on the day with Buck doing so in the 100 fly (1:01.76) and the 200 fly (2:13.48) and Carter in the 50 free (24.82) and 100 free (53.71). The latter mark tied Carter for tenth all-time on the Program All-Time Top-Ten list for the event.

Siena’s six freshmen continued to improve in their second collegiate meet, with all six posting at least one collegiate best. Owens did so in the 50 free (25.22), 100 free (54.78), and 100 back (1:02.79), while Spacciapolli swam new marks in the 100 breast (1:08.51), 200 breast (2:28.63) and the 200 IM (2:17.28). Pociask set a new mark in the 200 back (2:18.26), while Walls did so in the 500 free (5:31.20). Mya Reed swam the 200 IM (2:17.28) for the first time, while Grace Neno competed in the 500 free (5:36.51) for the first time.

The Saints will have a weekend away from competition before once again hitting the road for tri-meet competition on Saturday, November 5. Siena will head to Durham, New Hampshire to face the Wildcats and face off against Merrimack for the first time since 2016, with action beginning at Noon.

Graduate student Liam O’Connell and sophomore Archie Minto each won three races to help lead the Canisius men’s swimming and diving program past the University of Rochester 200-94 at the Burt Flickinger Center Pool in downtown Buffalo Saturday afternoon.

Despite three first-place finishes by freshman Lana Janson, the Canisius women’s team fell to Siena by the score of 166-128. The women’s event against the University of Rochester was a scrimmage, where the Golden Griffins defeated the Yellowjackets, 209-85.

O’Connell’s first win of the day came in the 1,000-free, where he posted a time of 9:54.19. The Hamburg, N.Y., native also scored a first-place finish in the 200-yard free before capping his afternoon with a win in the 500-yard free after he touched the wall in 4:43.71.

Minto, the reigning MAAC Male Swimmer of the Week, scored a win in the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 1:50.57, a time that was nearly four seconds in front of the race’s second-place finisher. He won the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 49.69, and then finished his day with a win in the 200-yard IM after he posted a time of 1:57.49.

Freshman Samuel NyKamp won both the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter diving events to help the Griffs’ cause. He scored the victory in the 1-meter event with his total score of 312.45 and then he won the 3-meter competition with his score of 320.85

In the women’s event, Janson picked up where she left off from last weekend, winning three different races on the day. She started her day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard free race, and then won the 100-yard breaststroke race with her time of 1:05.87. Her time of 2:23.52 in the 200-yard breaststroke race earned her another first-place finish, as she completed the race more than five seconds in front of the next closest finisher.

Junior Jordan O’Connor took first-place honors in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, while graduate student diver Adriana Bolender placed second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
