Several Virginia Undergraduates Withdraw From Westmont World Cup Stop

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Westmont

The second leg of the 2025 World Cup is set to kick off in less than 30 minutes, and several University of Virginia undergraduates have opted to scratch from the meet.

The following UVA swimmers have withdrawn:

The only UVA undergrads still listed on the entry sheets are Italian freshman Sara Curtis, Bosnian freshman Lana Pudar, Finnish freshman Davin Lindholm, and senior Jack Aikins. Virginia pros Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass, and Alex Walsh remain entered, of course.

After the opening leg, Walsh holds down the top spot in the series on the women’s side with 59.1 points, followed closely by Douglass (58.9) and Australian Kaylee McKeown (56.8).

While no reason for the scratches has been announced, Virginia is coming off a trip to Florida last weekend, where the Cavaliers opened their season with a dual meet against the Gators. The No. 1 UVA women defeated No. 6 Florida (1–1), 224–127, while the No. 13 men (0–1) fell to the fourth-ranked Gators, 191.5–159.5. The team stayed in nearby Sarasota for a short fall-break training trip before heading back to campus, where midterms are fast approaching.

Swim fans won’t have to wait long to see them back in the racing pool, as the Cavaliers’ home opener against North Carolina is set for Friday, October 24, at 4 p.m. The meet will also include a celebration of the 2025 NCAA Championship team.

“The team stayed in nearby Sarasota for a short fall-break training trip before heading back to campus”. Nearby? Sarasota is 185 miles from Gainesville in the opposite direction of Virginia.

They must have Walsh fatigue as well.

Mid terms are real!

Are they expected at the third leg or was this the sole time they would’ve been able to attend?

Curtis swam, but Pudar was a NS in the 200fly

So they are soft because they have to take mid terms? A random meet is not worth NCAA eligibility violations. But you seem really tough.

Swammers tend to forget that professional swimmers don’t usually make a decent enough living compared to footballers and basketball and baseball players. Most of them need to do well in school and either apply for real jobs or go to professional schools.

I am surprised to see how many people here forget that these student athletes are students first and athletes second.

I’ll let you know I went out in a storm today and didn’t even bring my galoshes or rain bonnet

Selfishly would like to see them at the meet, but the undergraduates really should be back at school.

I’m sure they all have a heavy load of classes on Friday

Whether they have Friday classes or not is not the issue

My comment was meant to be sarcastic towards the “undergraduates need to be back at school” comment. They’ve been away from school training in Florida, being away for one more weekend isn’t going to effect their schooling at all.

Unless there was a sickness going around it’s extremely annoying to me that they scratched.

Undergraduates should be wherever it works best for their studies and athletics. Their decision to make

Ah, yes, their professors and coaches should have no say in the matter.
