In a dramatic finish to the first contested event of these SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, Tennessee’s Bennett Greene just narrowly squeaked out the win in the men’s 1-meter diving event over Nick Harris of Texas by just .10 points, earning the Volunteers the first event win of these SEC Championships.
After a massive final round from Harris, Greene would need to pull off a massive final dive if he wanted to overtake the Longhorn on the final dive of the event. A fraction of a second after Green hit the water, the crowd erupted. As his final score appeared on the screen, it showed that Green’s final dive had slotted him atop the scores, downing Harris by just 0.10 points.
His final dive can be seen on the second slide of the Instagram post from Tennessee:
Greene was the first of two Volunteers in the top four of the event’s final, with teammate Thomas Ciprik finishing 4th for a great early points grab for the Volunteer men.
Tennessee also found success in the consolation finals, with Frazer Tavener and Nick Stone finishing 1-2, for key additional points to open up the scoring column.
This win for Greene also marks Head Diving Coach Jane Figueiredo’s first conference title as a winner in her first year in the position in Knoxville.
