Schultz set the tone for Dexter as its first swimmer to hit the water at finals. She led off the 200 medley relay in 26.15, staking her team to a lead it would not give up. Lizzy Merriman, Kate Mesaros and Gretchen Schultz completed a 1:44.21 relay to help Dexter win by almost a full second.

One event later, Schultz was back in the pool, swimming and winning the 200 free by a wide margin. Her 1:47.89 was just .01 seconds off the Division 2 state record, and also rattled a 1:47.54 pool record set by future Olympian Allison Schmitt in 2006.

Schultz also won the 100 free, going 50.34 to win a tight battle with Bloomfield Hills Marian’s Sophia Schott. Schott was coming off a barrier-breaking 22.99 win in the 50 free earlier in the meet.

Also winning for Dexter was Merriman, who took the 100 breast in 1:03.63.

East Grand Rapids broke the only state record of the D2 meet en route to a second place finish as a team. Their 200 free relay went 1:34.48 to break the Division 2 record and win by a half-second over Schott and Bloomfield Hills Marian.

That relay was made up of Lexus VanHoven, Hanna Sanford, Emily Converse and Gabby Higgins, with Higgins anchoring in 22.6 to outsplit and hold off Schott.

That same foursome went 3:27.44 to win the 400 free relay by a wide margin. Higgins, a junior, was 49.92 in anchoring that team.

Grosse Pointe South senior Claire Young double up individually, winning the 200 IM (2:04.78) and 100 back (55.20).

Other event winners:

  • Forest Hills Central went 1-2-3-4 in diving, led by junior Erin Neely in a new Division 2 record 485.20 points.
  • Forest Hills Central also won the first event after diving, with sophomore Felicity Buchmaier going 55.60 to win the 100 fly.
  • Rochester Adams senior Claire McGinnis took home the 500 free title in 4:59.18.
