Interesting. They’re not in my state but I wonders if it was ever considered.

I did a little digging yesterday, and it looks like Virginia, North Carolina, and (maybe) Maryland are the only states where public and private schools (generally) compete in completely separate associations and state championships.

It depends on the state you live in. My state allows you to train with your club and/or go to club meets as long as you are not missing high school practices/meets to do it. There are exceptions for big meets. The coach and AD need to approve it ( which they usually do). What your hs coach told you to do would be a total violation in my state.

I can tell you where I live, practice counts toward school attendance for HS swim. If you aren’t at practice and your coach is saying you are, that is a MASSIVE violation. Or, if you just don’t go you get hit with a truancy notice. It is total BS as HS swim practice gotta be top 3 biggest wastes of time of all time.

Massachusetts is … complicated. Boys and girls have D1 & D2 state meets in both the fall and winter, though winter tends to be more competitive.

Over 10 years ago Massachusetts ruled that swimming was in the winter. Some schools contested saying they couldn’t find pools to practice in, so they’ve allowed some schools to continue to compete in the fall. The times to qualify are different, and there’s literally only a handful of boys that swim in the fall. With the Mass restrictions on not missing school practice or meets for anything club related, there are more club swimmers in the fall because the season is essentially over before USA meets really get going. Most club swimmers don’t swim high school in the winter. It’s just too restrictive.

Appreciate the context! Most club swimmers don’t swim high school in the fall either.

Feel like Metros (DC) should be included as its own “state” meet. Thoughts?

I can boogie with that. Maybe we’ll make a special section for non-state meets, like that, Easterns, National Catholic Swimming & Diving…

It’s unfortunate states like South Dakota don’t have men’s swimming.
Otherwise cool to track this down.
