SAN DIEGO — USD swimming and diving completed its fifth event of the 2021-2022 season on Saturday, taking down Loyola Marymount by a score of 182-98 at the USD Sports Center Pool to earn a win.
The Toreros won 14 out of the Saturday’s 16 events, notching first-place finishes in the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay, Girls 1 Meter Diving, Girls 200 Yard Freestyle, Girls 100 Yard Backstroke, Girls 100 Yard Breaststroke, Girls 200 Yard Butterfly, Girls 50 Yard Freestyle, Girls 3 Meter Diving, Girls 100 Yard Freestyle, Girls 200 Yard Breaststroke, Girls 500 Yard Freestyle, and the Girls 100 Yard Butterfly.
Freshman Jane Riehs led the way for USD with a final score of 265.43 and nine points in the Girls 1 Meter dive, plus another nine points and a score if 244.58 in the Girls Three Meter Diving.
Freshman Abby Muaddi, juniors Callie Johnson and Sam Eason, and senior Alexa Phillips won the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay with a finals time of 1:48.20 and 11 points.
Senior Haley Ohlson won the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:03.27, earning her team three points.
Junior Mia Shaeffer was first in the Girls 200 Yard Butterfly, for 2:12.94 and nine points.
Junior Rachel Hubka won the Girls 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.84 and got nine points.
Sophomore Jayne Brandt rounded out the action with a time of 54.20 in the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle, good for nine points after she recorded a time of 54.20
The Toreros are back in action on Thursday, November 18, when they travel to Los Angeles to take part in the ELAC Invite. The event is set to run through Saturday, November 20.

SAN DIEGO, CA. – The Loyola Marymount University Lions women’s swimming team traveled down to San Diego and faced the Toreros in a dual meet Saturday afternoon.
The Lions came off a solid meet last weekend that produced the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Athlete of the Week in Lily Gallagher but fell to the Toreros 182-98.
Gallagher continued her impressive start to the 2021 season with a win in the 1000 free posting a time of 11:08.75, a near 13 seconds better than the next finisher.
Once again the younger Lions set the pace in the competition, led by Sophmore Heidi Ly who earned one of three Lion victories winning the 200 backstroke in 2:12.79. Freshman Natalie Hogenboom captured another victory for the Lions in the 500 freestyle with a season best time of 5:21.33.
Sophomore Abby Shaw also had a strong day for the Lions coming in second in the 100 free at 55:72, third in the 50 free at 25.65 and tying for second with freshman teammate Ashley Leaman in the 100 butterfly in 59.96, a tenth of a second behind the leader from USD. Leaman returned to the blocks 10 minutes later to place second in the 200 individual medley overtaking two Toreros in the final 10 yards. It was Leaman’s third close race of the day as she earlier had battled three Toreros stroke-for-stroke in the 200 butterfly placing fourth with a personal best time of 2:14.04.
The Lions return to the pool next weekend when they host Pepperdine for a dual meet on Saturday, November 6th at 11:00 a.m.
