16-year-old American Rylee Erisman is off to the races at the World Junior Championships in Romania. Erisman got off to a great start yesterday, helping the US to a silver medal in the girls 4×200 free relay with a 1:56.69. This morning, she built on that momentum, ripping a 53.17 in prelims of the girls 100 free.
With the performance, Erisman shattered her personal best, which had stood at 53.75. She also blew away the World Junior Championship Record, which Taylor Ruck set at 53.63 back at the 2017 World Junior Championships in Indianapolis. Moreover, Erisman obliterated the US National Age Group Record for 15-16 girls, which Claire Curzan held at 53.55. For what it’s worth, Erisman’s time this morning is also already under the US NAG for 17-18 girls, which Simone Manuel holds with a 53.25. Given that, Erisman is now the fastest American junior ever in this event.
Now, Erisman heads into tonight’s semifinals just 0.47 seconds off the World Junior Record, which Canada’s Penny Oleksiak set back in 2016. Erisman is only 16 years old, so she still has plenty of time to get down to that mark.
This morning, Erisman split the race brilliantly. She was out in 25.79 on the opening 50m, then came home in 27.38 on the back half, marking a difference of 1.59 seconds between her 50s.
Here is a split comparison between Erisman’s race this morning and Ruck’s swim from the 2017 World Junior Championships:
| Split | Rylee Erisman – 2025 World Junior Champs | Taylor Ruck – 2017 World Junior Champs |
| 50m | 25.79 | 26.18 |
| 100m | 27.38 | 27.45 |
| FINAL TIME | 53.17 | 53.63 |

Maybe I’m overthinking it but he has a shot at Penny’s WJR here. It’s a 9 year old record and I think she has a shot of breaking it.
a nine year old record that won olymic gold crazy
*tied for olympic gold* still crazy
I think LA28 will have a whole new slot of free style printers – Milou van Wijk, Sarah Curtis and now Rylee Erisman
Worth pointing out that repeating this time in the finals puts her on the Pan Pacs team!
Douglass has the 4th 100 Free spot at 53.16.
Rylee gets priority #1 if she dips under that.
Priority #3 if she beats Gemmell’s (currently sitting 5th) 53.51.
also note that right now, if she repeats a time under gemmel’s in finals, gemmel is still on the team because of the 200 free (as well as KD) in priority 1; it knocks the lowest priority swimmer OFF (lowest ranked in priority 4) the team at the moment, pending other qualifiers from world juniors
One of the other swimmers with a decent chance is derivaux, with her best chance probably today in the 200 Fly (and maybe 100 fly as well, i think shackell is ranked 3rd there with a 57 something)
after those 2 a few have an outside shot but need bigger drops to get into those spots, not super sure if anyone beside crush (who would… Read more »
Mena Boardman in the 50 Fly was only a couple of tenths away at Nationals
Woah! Smoking!
Her pacing is un-American.
awsi dooger will fall to his knees when he sees the splits
Awsi Dooger has a meltdown whenever he watches Rylee Erisman swims.
