Regan Smith: “This is going to be by far our biggest training year”

2026 PRO SWIM SERIES – AUSTIN

Video captured by Anya Pelshaw.

8x Olympic medalist Regan Smith has asserted herself in Austin this week, taking dominant wins in the 100 back (57.98) and 100 fly (56.18). Speaking with SwimSwam, she emphasized that because of the longer season, 2026 will be the biggest training year of this Olympic quad in the leadup to LA28. She also shared one of her hardest sets from winter training and her 2026 ‘Ins’ and ‘Outs’.

We too often take for granted how real she is. She gives us unfiltered facts when others give us PR speak. She of course has been told her boundaries, but she still finds a way to keep it real. Regan >>>>>>>>>>>>

Thank you Coleman, for these poolside interviews! I’m hoping you do one with Summer and Leon!
It seems like Regan has really grown in confidence this year.
I thought we were about to get some tea on the rude swimmer lol, but it went straight to French manicures. Just as well, I very much respect her sportsmanship.

besides the obvious differences in training philosophy between uva and texas its interesting to hear abt the differences in their approaches in this off year in the leadup to 2028 — seems like the uva pro group is using this year more for recovery (planned breaks in lieu of christmas training etc) in contrast

I have a feeling that approach will work just fine for Kate and Gretchen, but NOT Alex!

See there’s the difference. In track the offensive warmup woman would either be named by the athlete, or the info quickly leaked by others. Instead Regan transitions from that topic straight to her nails. That doesn’t lend to focused camerawork and theorized animosity, quickly escalated on the forums.

She joined in October 2022, so this would be her fourth season under Bowman’s direction.
