Pratt Sets Two Provincial Records at Canadian Age Group Champs

13 year old Cole Pratt of the Cascade Swim Club set two Alberta Provincial records in the first two events of the first night of the Canadian Age Group Championships. Pratt took the boy’s 13 year old 100 butterfly in a time of 58.56 beating his own record of 59.99, which he set early this month. It was also impressive to see that he beat the winner of the 14 year old age group by a second and a half.

Pratt then won the boy’s 200 backstroke in a time of 2:12.66 destroying the record of 2:15.64 set by Karl Wolk in 2005. Pratt also finished over four seconds ahead of the field.

He was not the only swimmer to walk away with two gold on Wednesday night, in fact there were three others who did the same. The Richmond Rapids Aman McCallum won the girl’s 13 year old 100 butterfly in a time of 1:03.87 and followed that up by winning the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:20.50. 14 year old Jade Hannah of the Halifax Trojan Swim Club took the girl’s 14 year old 100 butterfly in a time of 1:01.56 and then went on to collect gold in the 200 backstroke posting a time of 2:16.90. 15 year old Kayla Sanchez of the Markham Aquatic Club took gold in the girl’s 15 year old 100 butterfly recording a time of 1:02.19 and then took the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:17.70.

“Ever since I moved to MAC [Markham Aquatic Club], I have been working on my 400 IM [individual medley], and getting all my other strokes in order because my coach believes in having diversity in your swimming,” Sanchez told Swimming Canada. “I’ve been trying to get my fly together and today it was good. It’s fun to not just do freestyle because you get to swim every day and compete and test yourself against different people.”

There were two very impressive swims in the 50 breaststroke. 14 year old Faith Knelson of Ladysmith took the girl’s event in a time of 31.99 while 14 year old Gabe Mastromatteo of Kenora won the boy’s event in a time of 29.47.

After the first night of competition the Pointe-Claire Swim Club leads the meet with 225 points followed closely by the Cascade Swim Club who put up 219 points.
