I’m beginning to think that if you tapped Summer’s DNA, you might find she’s…63% dolphin. The water seems just to flooow by her, like no other swimmer I can remember. Of course it’s an illusion; she’s working extremely hard. Great job, Coleman. It is a perfect mix of video speaking for itself, spiced with your timely commentary.

Personally, I’m a big fan of self-correcting drills like top hat drill, although I call it paddle head drill because I’m unoriginal. In my limited experience, I don’t see many coaches utilizing these types of drills aside from some of the more prominent clubs like Sarasota and Carmel. Are they still relatively uncommon, or am I just not looking in the right places?

So basically, the two best swimmers in the world right now (arguably Leon Marchand and Summer McIntosh) are training in the US. However, they will compete for their home countries in the Olympics and Worlds. What are everyone’s thoughts?

So what? Swimmers train all over the world. They have to compete for their home country, not their training base. I don’t even understand what the issue is.

You wouldn’t be upset if Leon Marchand beat Carson Foster or if Summer McIntosh beat Katie Ledecky in the Olympics? I would want the US to prevail over France and Canada.

A few thoughts…

1) Why are you assuming that everyone in these comments are American?

2) Sports are capitalism and if the free market makes it worthwhile for athletes to train in a particular country, that’s what is going to happen. US athletes in some other sports certainly go to other countries to train.

3) Does Summer training with Brent or Leon training with Bob take anything away from Katie or Carson? If Summer and Leon were training in Canada and France, would Katie and Carson have a better chance to win?

4) Summer training with her Sharks teammates may actually help them improve and get on Us teams and get medals in the future. Gracie/Addison/Michaela may… Read more »

Nothing wrong with this at all. Kylee Masse trains in Spain with Ben Titley.

It happens in other sports as well. In Canada there are a lot of world class figure skaters from other countries that train here but represent their home country in international meets and the olympics.

World class athletes will do what’s best for themselves and if that means spending a great deal of time training in other countries to help them achieve their goals….why not.

All true but at the same time it should be acknowledged that the US system is a major contributor to their excellence (otherwise, why would they train here)? Foreign swimmers routinely express gratitude to their US coaches and teammates, which is laudable, but I rarely see them thank the US system which makes it all possible.

Macintosh was already a world champion before she moved if titley had stayed in Canada her improvement would have been the same

I think most everyone in swimming knows that the US system is pretty good. Who thanks a system when they do well in a meet? “I’d like to thank my Mom, Dad, coach and the US system for this Gold Medal.”

You really think training with the best athletes in the world is a bad thing for American swimmers?

The only ones that bum me out are the ones that basically grew up here. Ilya Kharun didn’t even know he was Canadian in sporting nationality lol. (I think Taylor Ruck grew up in AZ too but now I’m even starting to forget.)

Taylor Ruck did grow up in Arizona, and I believe her family still lives there.

Taylor grew up in Arizona her family moved when she was 3or4. There are so many athletes training in the USA Zane unless they disclosed their nationality no one can tell.

When it comes to relays I always cheer for team USA. For individuals I usually find myself cheering for the American because I’m more familiar with them, but honestly, when it’s someone I really like like Siobhan Haughey or Chlorine Daddy for example, I cheer for them instead. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Let’s send all of the MLB players back to their home countries then? Or how about any professor working at an American University? I only want homegrown teachers!

As long as they don’t take over our resources such as pool space its fine with me. I think top Canadians if they want to train in the sunshine they should come to the US seems like a no brainer.

Its the same with the colleges as long as they just supplement the team I think its great maybe 6–7 per team. Some people from other parts of the country are like foreigners to me anyway.

I have no problem with them training in the US. I have no problem with Bob and Brent coaching the best possible swimmers they can find. I DO have a problem with the fact that USAS gives money directly and indirectly to Bob and Sarasota/Brent and this money supports the club/training/coaching of Summer and Leon.

Sure Ira Klein, I bet USA Swimming is totally sending the Monopoly man down to Sarasota each month to hand deliver wads of cash for Brent to blow…
