The University of Wyoming women outscored New Mexico State 150 to 88 at the Corbett Pool at home, dropping a pool record in the 400 Medley Relay and winning 12 of 13 events in the process. This win propelled the Wyoming women’s unbeaten dual streak over the Aggies to 15.
The Cowgirls started off the meet with their record-breaking performance, swimming a 3:47.53, almost 12 seconds ahead of the second place New Mexico State A team (3:59.05). The time was almost five seconds faster than the previous pool record Wyoming set last season.
Junior Cowgirl Lauren McClure kept the Wyoming momentum going with a win in the 1000 Free (10:43.31). Her teammate Samantha Zavala followed up in 10:58.13 for second, just three one-hundredths of a second ahead of New Mexico State’s Amina Gummesson (10:58.16).
Wyoming Senior Claudia Carlson took the 200 Free (1:56.36), just ahead of New Mexico State’s Cori Molisee (1:56.78). Carlson went on to win the 100 Free as well (52.93), ahead of a 2-3-4 New Mexico State charge led by Molisee (54.98). Her teammates Josi Gabaldon (55.61) and Kaitlyn Hogan (57.13) took third and fourth, respectively.
Cowgirl Senior Melanie McDonough led a 1-2-3 Wyoming sweep in the 50 Free with a 23.68. She touched ahead of teammates Rachel McKivigan (24.15) and Sarae Dydo (24.28).
Wyoming’s Emma Dow kept the Cowgirl’s event-winning streak alive in the 400 IM (4:35.89), with her teammate Casey Duckworth (4:43.15) reeling in second place. New Mexico State’s Jennifer Brennecke was third in 4:47.28.
Sophomore diver Kari Campbell swept the diving events, taking home wins in both the 1-meter (285.15) and 3-meter (325.13) platforms. In the 1-meter, Campbell led a 1-2-3 Wyoming sweep ahead of teammates Keely Bishop (275.92) and Holly Heussner (245.30).
New Mexico State’s event win came in the 100 Fly, when Junior Dorottya Lennert touched first in 56.36 ahead of Wyoming teammates Karen Hendrick (56.72) and Emily Stucky (57.49).
Wyoming’s Emily Stevens took home the win in the 100 Back (57.90), the first event of the meet with exhibition swims for the Cowgirls. New Mexico State’s Cassandra Rupp officially touched second with a 59.56.
Cowgirl Nicole Hlavacek won the 500 Free in 5:07.28 in a tight race. Her teammate Kelly Sheldon finished just behind her in a 5:07.42 in her exhibition swim. New Mexico State’s Amina Gummesson was officially second in 5:23.05.
The Cowgirls finished off with a win in the last individual event and last relay of the meet, as Wyoming’s Maria Harutjunjan took the 100 Breast (1:04.06) and the Wyoming B Relay took the 200 Free Relay (1:36.16).
“We just swam outstanding and I was proud of the way we worked and competed,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said in a statement to Wyoming Athletics. “We wanted to give some kids a chance to swim in different events and we just had great enthusiasm all night.”
