2025 Brazil Open
- Flamengo Pool, Rio de Janeiro
- 50 Meters (LCM)
- Meet Central and Results
Many of Brazil’s top swimmers took to the blocks in Rio de Janeiro for the first day of the Brazil Open.
Though a lot of the country’s biggest names are competing overseas – Gui Caribe and Stephanie Balduccini in the U.S. and Maria Fernanda Costa in Australia – domestically-trained Brazilian talent convened to fight for the club trophies in the first contested Brazil Open in eight years.
The biggest statement of the first day came from a trio of men’s mid-d swimmers: Eduardo Moraes, Stephan Steverink, and Guilherme Costa. In that order, all three gentlemen turned in season bests of 3:47s to flood the global top 10. Moraes led the way with a 3:47.31, swift enough for #5 in the world rankings. This is the 24-year-old’s quickest time in nearly a year and a half. Moraes claimed the win for Minas Tennis Club, who leads the team race after day 1 by over 100 points. Moraes previously trained at Penn State and Michigan, and he announced a transfer to Cal this fall. However, he has only swum meets in Brazil thus far this season.

Keeping Moraes at bay, 2025 World Championship teammates Steverink and Costa reaped the minor medals, with 3:47.80 and 3:47.84, respectively. These times are both faster than what they went in Singapore, and they’re valid for #7 and #8 in the 2025-26 season rankings. As with all of Costa’s results in 2025, this swim was still a far cry from his 3:42.76 Americas record at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The most head-turning swim on the women’s end went to World Championships finalist Gabrielle Assis. The Flamengo athlete roared home in the women’s 200 breaststroke with a 2:26.76, winning with five seconds to spare. This is still nearly a second slower than the Paulista’s 2:25.97 season best from the Jose Finkel Trophy in October.
Other Day 1 Notes
