Pitt’s Alex Bauer Enters NCAA Transfer Portal After Sophomore Season

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

ACC ‘B’ finalist Alex Bauer has entered the transfer portal, he posted to Instagram on Monday. Bauer’s entry comes a day after it was announced that Pitt head coach Chase Kreitler would resign from his position, effective immediately.

Kreitler said, “As I entered the final year of my contract, my hope was to continue building on this momentum through a multi-year extension. I was recently informed that the department intends to move in a different strategic direction after the 2026–2027 season. While I was offered the opportunity to coach one more year, I do not believe I could operate in integrity continuing to recruit transfers and incoming student-athletes knowing I would not be part of their journey beyond next season. Therefore, I have decided to resign from my position as the Head Swimming & Diving Coach at Pitt, effective immediately.”

Bauer posted on Instagram, “In light in recent events. I have decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal. I want to thank everyone at Pitt especially Chase,Micheal,Gideon, and Kaersten as well as my teammates and support staff. I would not be in position I am in without them.”

Bauer and other Pitt athletes have 30 days to enter their names into the transfer portal, despite the portal closing last Friday for men. Head coaching changes are one exception to the transfer portal window.

Bauer just finished his sophomore season with the Panthers and went best times in all three of his events at the 2026 ACC Championships. His highest finish came in the 400 IM where he was 16th in a 3:46.31 (3:45.42 in prelims). He also was 35th in the 200 IM (1:46.34) and 35th in the 200 breast (1:58.46). He also time trialed the 200 free and swam to a lifetime best 1:36.63.

His lifetime best in the 400 IM before arriving at Pitt was 3:59.54 at YNats during his senior year of high school, and he dropped eight and six seconds, respectively, in each of his first two years at Pitt.

Best of luck Alex! If we can keep you at Pitt, we’d love to, but we want you to be somewhere you feel you can succeed even more than that!

Best of Luck to Alex. Sorry that an Athletic Director had to cause the uprooting of so many quality student athletes.

There will be. But it’ll take time to rebuild the program so any new Head Coach needs to be reputable and hit the ground running fast.
