Persson Clocks 200 Breast Meet Record To Kick Off Swedish SC C’ships

2019 SWEDISH SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2019 Swedish Short Course Championships started off with a bang, as 4 individual swimmers notching qualifying times to be considered for this year’s European Short Course Championships taking place December 4th-8th in Glasgow, Scotland.

Leading the way was Adam Paulsson in the men’s 400m freestyle, with the 24-year-old posting a winning effort of 3:43.12 to take the gold tonight. Beating the field by over 6 seconds. Paulsson’s time narrowly slid under the QT of 3:43.21 needed to add his name to the Swedish roster for Glasgow.

The next closest in the race was Robin Hanson, the multi-European Junior Championships medalist who reaped silver in 3:49.59, the only other sub-3:50 outing of the field, but well over the QT. Hanson would later lead-off his 4x200m free relay in 1:45.77.

For Paulsson, the man will be looking to not only final in this 400m free event in Glasgow but finish anywhere but 8th place, which is the slot he was dealt at both the 2017 edition of the European Short Course Championships, as well as at the World University Games this summer.

Making waves in the men’s 200m breast this evening was Erik Persson, with the Swedish national record holder easily getting under the 2:06.44 QT with a big-time swim of 2:04.95. That result checks-in as a new meet record, as well as enters the list of all-time Swedish performances at #7.

Splitting 1:00.05/1:04.90, Persson got to the wall 2 seconds ahead of Paulsson, who touched just outside the QT in 2:06.99. Persson finished 6th in this event at the 2017 edition of SC Euros in Copenhagen where he notched a time of 2:03.86 in the final. Earlier in that meet, he registered a national record mark of 2:03.51, which remains on the books.

Two women earned consideration times this evening in the form of Sara Junevik in the 100m fly and Hanna Erikssonin the 800m free. First, in the fly sprint, absent World Record holder Sarah Sjostrom who is opting out of SC Euros, Junevik split 26.70/31.89 to produce a winning mark of 58.59. That sneaked under the 58.62 QT by just .03.

Junevik finished 13th in this event in Copenhagen in a time there of 58.20, her personal best.

For Eriksson’s part, she clocked a time of 8:33.25 in the women’s 8free to comfortably clear the 8:35.20 QT. Her time represents a new PB by almost half a second. She was also in Copenhagen 2 years ago where she finished 16th in this event.
