OMAHA, Neb. – The 2023-24 swimming and diving season opened Friday night at the H&K pool with a meet between Omaha and Midland. Both the men and women had dominant wins, with the women finishing 137-74 and the men finishing 144-92.
Both the men and women will start their season with a 1-0 record.
“We had some great swims today,” said Head Coach Jessica Hessel. “Our team has really worked as a unit and I know they were ready to get a look at what the training has done for them so far this season. A lot of our swimmers were trying new race strategies and putting new stroke techniques into play. Things are starting to click and I’m excited to see how it continues to translate throughout the season. I was very pleased with how we raced and have good insight of how we need to train leading into our mid-season meet.”
Friday’s action started with a 400-medley relay team of Rylee Trojan, Payton Krug, Annika Bussinger, and Payton Easley taking a first with a time of 4:01.32. The men’s team compiled of Jackson Burns, Mason Schroeder, Jace Walker, and Michael Johnson also finished first with a time of 3:29.20.
In the 1000-free, Kadence Jeffries claimed first with a time of 10:51.32 and Carina Monroe earned second with a time of 10:58.08. On the men’s side, Kyle Kulow took first with a time of 10:14.58.
During the 200-free Payton Easley captured first with a time of 1:57.03. Olivia Dendinger (1:57.85) and Anna Lowary (1:58.68) rounded out the top-three. Grant Schaeffer, with a time of 1:45.76, took first, with Mason Schroeder (1:47.05) and Aj Stephens (1:50.44) capping off the top-three.
In the 100-back the women took the top six spots, with Annika Bussinger coming out on top with a time of 58.30. The men also claimed the top-three led by Jace Walker (53.10).
Freshman, Aubrey Hutter, claimed her first ever first-place finish in the 100-breast with a time of 1:09.40. Amir Haviv picked up the first spot with a time of 56.60.
In the 200-butterfly the Heidi Lenarz and Calie Herrick were the only two women to compete, finishing with times of 2:15.82 and 2:18.78 respectively. Thomas Neil claimed the second with a time of 2:00.14.
The women claimed the top three spots in the 50-free with Julia Thomas coming in first with a time of 24.14. Owen Hoak led the race with a time of 20.69 and Grant Waszak claiming second behind Hoak with a time of 21.18.
Another sweep of the top four came from Omaha in the women’s 100-free. All four Mavericks who finished in the top-four clocked times under a minute. Julia Thomas recorded first with a time of 53.58. The men also took all four top spots, with Schaeffer notching a time of 46.83.
The 200-back was the first event of the evening that the women didn’t come out on top. Monroe claimed third with a time of 2:13.14. Mason Schroeder also claimed third with a time of 1:53.91.
Payton Krug earned second in the 200-breast with a time of 2:32.90 and Ryan Korthals took third for the men, finishing with a time of 2:09.37.
In the 500-free Aubrey Hutter completed her race with a time of 5:14.76 and Olivia Dendinger clocked a time of 5:30.32. On the men’s side Caleb Miller finished with a time of 4:55.34 and Matt Uehling recorded a time of 5:06.50.
During the 100-butterfly, Easley completed the race with a time of 59.89 and Amir Haviv completed the men’s race with a time of 51.79.
In the final individual swim event, Annika Bussinger clocked a time of 2:14.73 in the 200-IM. During the men’s race, Ryan Korthals completed the race with a time of 2:03.31.
Swimming events wrapped up with the 200-free relay. The women’s team compiled of Heidi Lenarz, Kadence Jeffries, Aubrey Hutter, and Payton Easley completed the race with a time of 1:38.31. For the men, a team of Kyle Kulow, Jace Walker, Michael Johnson, and Owen Hoak finished with a time of 1:24.55.
In the women’s 1M-diving, Darby Drake compiled a final score of 254.48 and freshman Brooke Robbins claimed second with a score of 246.60.
During the men’s 1M-diving, Ian Blackstock finished the event with a score of 244.73 and Cody Kranz compiled a 228.15 final score.
“We started this season with only diving one-meter in the first meet and I thought divers performed quite strong,” said diving coach Eric Sprague. “On our women’s side, Darby Drake missed most of last season with an injury and she put on an impressive performance tonight with her victory. Reece Cooper, missed all of last season because of injury and she put in some incredible dives as well. Sophomore, Bella Price, put together a strong performance and, Freshman, Brooke Robbins really made a statement with her runner-up finish today. Our women divers look to be very competitive this year. On the men’s side, Junior, Ian Blackstock is continuing his solid progression. Ian had one dive get away from him I know he’d like to have back. Congratulation to William Mueller who put together a consistent competition and won his first meet as a freshman! It’s year three of our men’s program and they are on pace to be quite competitive this season as well.”
“We have a quick turnaround for our meet with Rockhurst next Friday. We’ll be competing one-meter and three-meter next week and I know the group is chomping at the bit to compete both boards. We’re excited to be competing again!”

OMAHA, Neb. – Midland University began its 2023-24 swimming and diving season on Friday with a dual at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The Warriors competed in 16 events against the Mavericks, falling 137 to 74.
Lily Harrell and Joelle Zipp took the top placings in the 200-yard backstroke. Harrell’s time of 2:19.64 earned first place while Zipp turned in a time of 2:37.38 for second.
Quinty Rouschop took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:49.89.
Sophia Gurrieri had a pair of wins on the afternoon. She swam a time of 1:07.70, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly, and had a time of 2:14.40 in the 200-yard individual medley. Harrell was second in the medley race with a time of 2:21.62.
In relay action, Midland’s best showings came in the 200-yard freestyle. With two teams in the pool, the Warriors went 1-2 with a time of 1:45.15 and 1:52.90. The winning relay team consisted of Mya Nemechek, Harrell, Lilli Heaston, and Abby Ertz.
Next up for Midland will be a home dual with Rockhurst next weekend. The Warriors will take to the pool inside the Dillon Family Aquatic Center on Saturday, October 14. Start time is slated for 10:00 a.m. in Fremont.
