Olympic Trials Qualifier Erica Laning Chooses Arizona State for 2017

Mid-distance freestyler Erica Laning has made a verbal commitment to swim for Arizona State University, beginning in the fall of 2017.

“I just really feel that ASU has amazing opportunities for me as a student athlete and I knew the second I walked on to the campus that it was the place for me. I couldn’t be more pleased with my decision.”

Laning is a senior at Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is the defending champion in the 200y free (1:46.36) and 500y free (4:42.79) at the 2016 TISCA Tennessee High School Swimming and Diving Championships. Laning also swims for Tennessee Aquatics; she has qualified for 2016 Olympic Trials in the 200m free and 400m free. Her top times include:

  SCY LCM
1000/800 free 10:14.10 8:57.62
500/400 free 4:42.79 4:15.77
200 free 1:46.36 1:59.82
100 free 51.64 57.83
100 back 56.41 1:09.40
200 fly 2:03.16 2:20.11

Laning will be a welcome addition to the Sun Devils’ squad, filling the void in mid-distance freestyle that will occur with the graduation of Kat Simonovic, the lone ASU scorer in the top 16 at Pac-12s in both the 200 free (tenth) and 500 free (ninth). Laning’s best times would have placed 11th and fourth in those respective events at 2016 Pac-12 championships.

I guess she’ll be swimming with the assistant coach next year since Bob will be coaching the Pro group. According to their current assistant, no one is on deck except one coach?? Is this true?

AH, the unnamed assistant, as if there’s only one. “I guess” …”I heard” … Interesting.

“I GUESS” the only point to your post is to disparage ASU in hopes that other young stars don’t see the same opportunities. ” I HEARD ” that you were an assistant at one of the schools Ms. Laning turned down?? IS THIS TRUE”?

Enough on bashing Coach Bowman to discourage elite ASU recruits!!! You sound like a bitter person and have a personal vendetta against the greatest coach there is. Jealous much??? Forksup and Congrats, Erica!!! Great choice… 🙂
