Night three of the 2026 Australian Swimming Trials saw multiple eye-catching performances posted during the women’s 200 free final.

Mollie O’Callaghan, the reigning Olympic and world champion in this event, clinched the victory in a season-best time of 1:52.86, logging one of the fastest swims in history in the 200 free.

The 22-year-old’s winning time marked the third-fastest swim of her career and the fourth-fastest performance of all-time, solidifying her spot atop the global rankings in the event. O’Callaghan’s performance also marks the fastest time in the world so far this season, a position she already held from early this season after turning in a time of 1:53.52 at the China Open in March.

She is the only female swimmer in the world to have cracked the 1:53 barrier so far this season.

O’Callaghan has been faster on two occasions; she broke the world record with a time of 1:52.85 at the 2023 World Championships, and she was the runner-up at the 2024 Australian Olympic Trials in a time of 1:52.48, just behind Ariarne Titmus‘s world record-breaking time of 1:52.23. O’Callaghan’s performance from the 2024 Australian Olympic Trials still stands as the second-fastest time in history.

O’Callaghan did her best to chase down the world record during her race in Sydney, posting splits well under Titmus’s world record pace for the first 150 meters of the race before falling behind the record line on the last 50 meters.

200 1:52.86 (29.43) 1:52.48 (28.37) 1:52.23 (28.28)

Her victory tonight gives O’Callaghan possession of three out of the top five all-time performances in the women’s 200 free.

All-Time Performances, Women’s 200 Freestyle (LCM)

  1. Ariarne Titmus (AUS), 1:52.23 – 2024 Australian Olympic Trials
  2. Mollie O’Callaghan (AUS), 1:52.48 – 2024 Australian Olympic Trials
  3. Mollie O’Callaghan (AUS), 1:52.85 – 2023 World Championships
  4. Mollie O’Callaghan (AUS), 1:52.86 – 2026 Australian Swimming Trials
  5. Federica Pellegrini (ITA), 1:52.98 – 2009 World Championships

Turning in another standout performance in the 200 free final in Sydney was Lani Pallister, who snagged the runner-up spot behind O’Callaghan in 1:53.65. Pallister’s swim marked a significant personal best time for her, knocking over a second off her previous lifetime best (1:54.77) from the 2025 World Championships.

Pallister had the fastest closing 50 split in the field, coming home in 28.90 to secure the silver. Her time makes her just the eighth woman in history to break the 1:54 barrier.

Pallister’s performance tied her for 5th on the ranking of all-time top performers in the event, sharing the spot with Canadian star Summer McIntosh, who posted this time at the 2023 World Championships.

Pallister now sits at 2nd in the world this season behind O’Callaghan.

In 2023 and 2025, MOC dropped about 1 second in the 200 from trials to the big meet. If she does the same this year, that would be a 1:51. Really hope she does, it would be insane to see.

Lani going a 1:53.6, faster than peak Ledecky, and faster than I think any of us thought she could go. What is she capable of in the 800?

Imagine how incredible this relay could have been with Titmus.

Indeed – a great post.

We just need the others to step-up, but there must be at least 5-6 in the 1.55 – 56 range that are genuinely in the mix heading into LA28, and fighting to get that rare opportunity. A nice scenario!
