CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI swimming and diving hit the water for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon in its Purple and Gold Intrasquad meet at the Glen F. Henry Pool.

Saturday’s competition ended in a 142-142 scoring tie, with the purple team claiming the win in a 100-yard medley relay tiebreak.

The purple team claimed victory in the first two events with the 200-yard medley team of Helena HeubergerSydney AirdScout Bergwall and Faith Larsen outouching their next closest opponent. Olivia Chambers gave the purple team a win with an impressive performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Morgan Meyer won the 200-yard freestyle to give the gold team its first win of the day, while Abby Lear claimed first place in the 50-yard freestyle. Bergwall took first in the 100-yard butterfly, as Hallory Domnick won the 100-yard freestyle, and Heuberger narrowly outouched Payton Hall in the 100-yard backstroke.

Amber Finke gave the gold team victory in the 500-yard freestyle, 10 seconds ahead of second place Natalia Verastegui, with Aird winning the 100-yard breaststroke over Ema Lavigne by 1.26 seconds. The gold relay team of Finke, Lear, Taylor Short and Meyer clinched the 200-yard freestyle relay, just beating the purple team of Larsen, Casey Summers, Verastegui and Chambers.

On the one-meter springboard, divers competed in team pairs with the purple team tandem of Eric Peters and Taylor Hogan claiming victory over the gold team of Maddie MoranAbby Hutchins and Hannah Taylor.

In some unique events, Peters claimed the 50-yard freestyle for divers only, while and Sarah Walpole won the swimmer diving competition.

Following the meet, the UNI team held a moment of silence in honor of former Panther swimmer Lily Ernst, who passed away this past July.

UP NEXT

UNI opens the regular season on Friday, Oct. 7 as the Panthers host Iowa at 5 p.m. Coming off their first dual meet win over the Hawkeyes in program history last season, it will be the first time since February 2012 that Iowa has visited Cedar Falls.
