The 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup series kicked off on Friday in Carmel, Indiana, where a plethora of domestic and international talent is racing. That includes a large group off Europeans headed by Swiss Olympian Noe Ponti.
24-year-old Ponti of Switzerland fired off a time of 48.53 to get to the wall first in the men’s 100m butterfly final, establishing a new U.S. Open record in the process.
Canadian Ilya Kharun hit a time of 49.02 as the silver medalist, while South African Olympic multi-medalist Chad le Clos rounded out the podium in 49.57.
This evening, Ponti was the only swimmer under 49 seconds in the event.
In doing so, the Swiss ace surpassed the former U.S. Open standard of 48.63, set by American Tom Shields at the 2015 Duel in the Pool.
This evening, Ponti split 10.38/12.28/12.78/13.09 to establish the new U.S. Open standard.
Splits Comparison:
| Noe Ponti | Noe Ponti | Tom Shields | |
| World Record (2024) | New US Open Record |
Old US Open Record (2015)
|
|
| 50m | 22.16 | 22.66 | 22.56 |
| 100m | 25.55 | 25.87 | 26.07 |
| Total Time | 25.55 | 48.53 | 48.63 |
Ponti is already the World Record holder in the event, swimming 47.71 to win gold at December’s World Short Course Championships. His time on Friday ties as the 11th-best performance in history. Because the United States doesn’t host a National Championship in short course meters, and rarely hosts any other meet in short course meters, most of the U.S. Open Records are from either the 2019 International Swimming League season, the 2022 World Cup meet hosted in Indianapolis, or some much older records from the old Duel in the Pool series.
Ponti’s lifetime best and Swiss national standard remains at the 47.71 World Record he established at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, where he won gold.
