No Haughey, Cheah Among 32 for Hong Kong at Asian Championships

The Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association (HKASA) has announced a roster of 32 swimmers nominated to the 2016 Asian Swimming Championships that will be held in okyo, Japan in November, and two their biggest stars are absent from the list.

American-based Siobhan Haughey, the country’s only semi-finalist at the 2016 Olympic Games in swimming, is not on the roster after placing 13th in the 200 free in Rio – her only swim.

Geoff Cheah, a former All-American at Stanford and Hong Kong’s only male swimmer at the Olympics since 2004, is also absent, although he was listed on the country’s original roster.

That leaves just 2 from the Olympic roster of 7 who will represent the country in both Rio and Tokyo: Camille Cheng and Claudia Lau. Lau, a backstroker, is the strongest chance at an individual Asian medal. She was 19th in the 100 back and 18th in the 200 back at the Olympics, which made her the third and second fastest Asian swimmer, respectively, in those events.

In 2012, at the last edition of these multi-discipline (water polo, synchro, and diving) championships, Hong Kong finished 4th on the medals table with 1 silver and 9 bronze medals. That included a clean sweep of the relay bronzes.

The roster was chosen based on the top 2 swimmers from whom nominations were received in each event, given that they had a score of 90 or above on the HKASA point system.

I think there is a typo in the roster that both gender are typed as Women…

Also Hang Yu Sze in the team was in the 2016 olympics too and she is a 3 times olympian (2004,12, 16)
