Niagara University has announced the hiring of Matt Bosse as head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming programs. Bosse replaces former head coach Eric Bugby, who stepped down in April to pursue another coaching opportunity.
“The upward trajectory of Niagara Swimming attracted several strong candidates for this critical leadership role,” said Associate Vice President for Athletics Simon Gray in the university’s press release. “We are excited that Matt Bosse will be our next head coach because of his recruiting and coaching experience and, importantly, his dedication to developing student-athletes. Matt swam and coached in the MAAC [Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference], and his knowledge and commitment to the sport will be incredibly impactful for our stellar student-athletes.”
Bosse most recently served as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Towson University. While with the Tigers, he worked as the recruiting coordinator while also helping coach several different training groups. He guided swimmers to 12 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) championships and 22 team records, and helped train Brian Benzing, who finished as national runner-up in the 100 breaststroke in 2024.
Before his time at Towson, Bosse worked at Fairfield University from 2021-22, where he managed recruiting and travel coordination. During his tenure, Fairfield’s swimmers achieved six individual titles and 17 school records. The men’s program finished second and the women’s program finished third at the MAAC Championships. The men jumped from a 6th-place finish in 2020, while the women were coming off a conference title that same year. The 2021 meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bosse began his coaching career at Wilmington College from 2019-2021, where his work with athletes resulted in 15 new school records and one conference record. He has also gained experience working at swim camps for Virginia, Army West Point, and Kenyon College.
“I’m excited to join the Niagara University community,” Bosse said. “I would like to thank Simon Gray, Dedra Palmer, and everyone who was involved with the search committee for this opportunity. I’m thrilled to be able to help our student-athletes build upon their recent success, in the classroom and pool. Being on campus I could tell that Niagara has a lot to offer!”
As a student-athlete at Iona College, Bosse earned recognition on the program’s 2010s All-Decade Team and achieved multiple top-8 finishes at MAAC Championships, with particular success in the backstroke events. He competed at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships in both the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons, with his top finish coming in the 200 backstroke, where he placed 15th in 2018. He served as team captain in 2019.
Bosse graduated Magna Cum Laude from Iona in 2019, majoring in business administration in finance and minoring in marketing.
Located in New York, just a few minutes from Niagara Falls, the university competes in the MAAC. The swimming programs are coming off a blockbuster 2024–25 season, sweeping the men’s and women’s team titles at the conference Championships. The men won by 32 points, while the women dominated with a 169-point margin over second place.

Great guy, good energy. Will be interesting to see if he can run a program as the main guy. Nothing but respect for him, hope he crushes it!
Great Coach….Congrats Matt!
Congratulations from all your friends in Gael Nation!
Congratulations Matt
Welcome to MAAC
Must have been crushing it at Towson to have gotten this opportunity. I wonder if he was Benzings primary coach
I think he was just a warm body and Niagra needed to hire someone. A match made in heaven.
I particularly liked the “upward trajectory of Niagara Swimming attracted several strong candidates”. Okay Simon, really?? The mere fact you said that – means there were not several strong candidates.
Also, knowing Niagara, he’s also tasked with being the Aquatic Director, teach a PE class, run a residence hall, and sweep up the gym after home games.
A fine coach indeed.
Great hire! Congrats Matt!
The Boss man! Best of luck. I hope you get second in the MAAC behind Iona
