Nathan Adrian Tops Magnussen for Olympic Gold in 100 Freestyle

James Magnussen delivered in the 100 meters freestyle Olympic final, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Team USA’s Nathan Adrian.

Adrian’s win marks the 3rd straight time the United States has won the 100 freestyle at an Olympic Games held in London.

Swim analysts (and swim-nerds) had high hopes for Adrian after his 2010 Pan Pacific Championship wins over Cesar Cielo in both the 50 and 100 meters freestyle.

Adrian faltered in 2011 at the World Championships in Shanghai, finishing off the medal podium, way off. Magnussen won in an epic 47.63. Adrian was six tenths behind, 48.23.

By any measurement, Adrian’s gold medal performance is an upset, and will surely seal his name in the annals of swimming history.

Adrian credits coach David Durden at the University of California at Berkeley with his continued success.

Adrian anchors Team USA’s 4×100 medley relay on the final night of Olympic swimming competition.

Who’s that guy “NAIRDA” in the photo above? Shouldn’t you have used a picture of Nathan?

Haha, I notice they haven’t put the highlight on NBC yet…maybe because of Rowdy Gaine’s freakout after the finish? It was classic!

I hope the economics can work for Adrian to stay in the sport another 4 years. I think he has more to give and can get better. He is also just a world class guy who is a great sportsman.
