Mustangs Wrap Up Tri-Meet Against Hawaii and UCSB

Cal Poly had several swimmers and divers finish in the top five of their respective events during the second day of a tri-meet against Hawai’i and UC Santa Barbara hosted at Anderson Aquatic Center on Saturday.

A day after winning the men’s 200-yard individual medley, Mustang sophomore Mickey Mackle was second in the 400 IM, at 4:03.18. Paolo Stanchi finished fifth in the same event, in 4:04.33. Mackle later added a fourth-place swim in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:57.90.

Rachel Cleak (right), a senior, led the Cal Poly women with a second-place finish in the 200 fly, with a time of 2:07.47.

Kendall Dunn, a sophomore for the Mustangs, was the runner-up in the men’s 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:08.83, ahead of teammateTyler Pickett, who clocked a fifth-place 2:12.94.

In the 200 freestyle, Cal Poly senior Adrian Brynnel was third, at 1:41.95, while sophomore teammate Sonny Fierro placed fourth at 1:42.26. In the 100 breast, Mackey Hopen (at 57.49 seconds) and Jimmy Deiparine(57.66), both juniors, also finished third and fourth. Fierro was also third in the 1,650 free, at 16:04.07, slightly ahead of Brynnel (fifth; 16:11.51).

Caleb Davies claimed fourth place in the 100 free, in 46.45 seconds. Another freshman, Austin Cunniff, was fifth in the men’s 200 fly for Cal Poly, at 2:01.89.

The Mustang women took third and fourth place in the 100 fly, as Taylor Guy finished in 58.87 seconds and Daniella Orlandi clocked a 58.99-second swim. Guy was also fourth in the 200 fly (at 2:08.99).

Taylor Spivey finished third in the women’s 1,650 free for the Mustangs, at 17:41.50. In the women’s 200 backstroke, Jessi Modlich finished in 2:07.24 to also come in third.

Senior Jill Jones finished in fourth place in the 100 free, in 53.18 seconds. Gabby Lindblad had a fifth-place effort in both the 100 breast (1:07.54) and 200 breast (2:25.66), as did Allison de Peralta in the 100 back (59.33 seconds).

In diving, Paul Fischetti was third on the men’s 1-meter board, with a score of 247.25. Sami McIntyre placed fourth on the women’s 3-meter board, scoring a 248.40.

The Mustangs will stay home to host the Mustang Invitational at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 and 10 a.m. Nov. 9.

UCSB Splits Series with Cal Poly, Hawaii in Tri-Meet

The men split their tri-meet with Cal Poly and Hawaii by defeating Cal Poly, 247.5-119.5 and falling to Hawaii, 185-181. The men enjoyed success in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 1st place finish by the team of Wade AllenRyan HanniLucas Norman, and Alex Campbell.

The men fell short against Hawaii in the team competition, however the Gauchos received strong performances from Senior Ryan Hanni. Hanni won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.89. Hanni also took home 1st place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 45.09 with teammates Wade Allen and Lucas Norman finishing 2nd and 3rd.  The men’s 200 yard backstroke winnerAndy Castilleja clocked in at 2:03.76. Mickey Mowry was the 200 yard butterfly winner with a time of 1:49.18. Randy Aukhus finished first place in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 3:59.48

Lester Wright placed second in the men’s 1 meter diving with 320.6 points.
