Mitchell Schott, a World University Games medalist this past summer, was in Heat 1 of the men’s 400 free this morning but made a mockery of those seedings with a swim nearly 20 seconds under his entry time, clocking 3:41.79 to lead the early heats in Toronto by nearly five seconds.

Entered on his long course time of 4:01.50, the Princeton Tiger took the heat win by 20 seconds, and posting a time that will likely hold up as one of the top eight even after the final heat tonight. He would have placed 6th in the first stop in Carmel and 7th at the second stop in Westmont with his swim today.

Schott was out hard, flipping in 1:49.14 before coming home in a solid 1:52.65. He now ranks as the joint-16th-fastest American in history in the event. The #1 (Kieran Smith), #3 (Luke Hobson) and #4 (Carson Foster) American swimmers will go in the final heat later on today.

Schott had a breakout summer, competing in his first international meet for the U.S. at the World University Games in Berlin. He made the final with best times in the 200 IM and 400 IM at U.S. Nationals in June, qualifying for the WUG team in the former, and dropped even more time later in the summer.

He won a silver medal individually in the 200 IM in Germany, posting a time of 1:58.25 that included an elite 27.94 final 50. He had a best of 1:59.31 prior to last summer, and dropped over a second en route to his first individual international podium.

However, he also delivered a pair of wicked swims on the 4×200 free relay, going 1:46.23 in the heats before opening with a 1:46.06 leadoff in the final. That marked a 1.73 second drop from his pre-meet best, and ranks him 21st all-time among American swimmers. Among active U.S. athletes, he ranks 11th.

There were additional splits of 48.35 and 48.15 on the men’s 4×100 free relay, and 48.05 on the mixed 4×100 free relay

Today’s swim was a great indication that Schott is in line to pick up where he left off this summer. He is yet to race in yards this season, so this is the first look at the Princeton swimmer this season and he seems primed to deliver some big times later on in the year.

He was 1:31.63 in the 200 free at the Ivy League Championships, but has dropped 2.65 seconds in long course since then. With a time of 1:31.06 required for the NCAA ‘A’ final last year and six of the eight swimmers from that final graduating this summer, he could score some big points for the Tigers.

Rumor has it that Hoagie Haven is the secret to his success.

But seriously, Schott’s breakout is incredibly exciting, both for Princeton and for Team USA. For those paying attention, he’s still pretty young (was 20 this summer), dropping a bunch of time, and very much in the mix for LA28.
