2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Spain’s Mireia Belmonte was a no-show in heat three of the women’s 800m freestyle this morning after missing the final of the 200m butterfly earlier in the prelims session.

Belmonte went into both the 200m butterfly and the 800m freestyle as the defending short course world champion, and won’t have the option to defend either of those two titles.

Not only is Belmonte the defending world champion in both events, but she holds both the championship records and world records in the two swims.

Belmonte has won the last two short course world championship titles in the 200m butterfly. Prior to her 2014 win in the 800m freestyle, she was second at the 2010 meet in Dubai.

Heading into tonight’s final now, both events have opened up significantly. Kelsi Worrell of the United States is now leading the charge in the 200m butterfly final with Yufei Zhang and Katinka Hosszu hot on her heels.

Hosszu will also likely be featured in the 800m freestyle. Her heat of the 800m freestyle is coming up momentarily. If she makes the final she’ll be set up for a very tough double.
