MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota swimming and diving programs, both ranked No. 25 by the CSCAA, took care of a pair of non-conference foes Friday at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Gopher men (4-0) swept St. Thomas, 202-86, and South Dakota State, 203-87, while the women (5-0) did the same by scores of 206-84 over the Tommies and 199-89 over the Jackrabbits.
With a majority of the swimmers taking part in events they do not normally compete in, the Golden Gophers still won every event. The men got victories from 12 different individuals, while the women saw 11 different individuals claim first place. In addition, 18 swimmers, nine on each side, set personal records.
The men’s team saw six individuals pick up multiple wins Friday, led by redshirt junior Lucas Farrar’s four victories. Individually, he got wins in the 50 and 100 free, and was part of the 400 free relay victory along with junior Kaiser Neverman and sophomores Chris Morris and Bar Soloveychik. He also took home first-place honors in the 200 medley relay with Neverman, fifth-year senior Max McHugh and senior Desmon Sachtjen.
Along with his relay wins, Neverman also claimed first place in the 100 breast, while McHugh also picked up an individual win in the 200 breast and Morris did the same in the 200 back.Freshmen Alberto Hernandez and Drew Bennett grabbed multiple first-place finishes. Hernandez won in the 200 free and 200 IM, while Bennett swept the 1- and 3-meter boards in diving.
Individual triumphs went to juniors William Christenson (100 fly) and Chris Nagy (1000 free), while freshmen Luke Leonidas (100 back) and Denton Smith (200 fly) each notched wins, as well.
Eight members of the women’s team garnered multiple wins, including four for sophomore Hannah Cornish. She touched first in the 50 free and 200 IM and was part of two relay wins. She was joined in the 400 free relay by seniors Olivia Bloomer, Kate Sullivan and Maggie Summit. While the 200 medley relay was won by Cornish, seniors Emma Lezer and Jordan McGinty and freshman Faith Johnson.
In addition to her relay win, McGinty also finished first in the 100 free and 100 back, while Johnson (200 back), Lezer (100 breast) and Sullivan (100 fly) also added individual wins to their relay victories.
Senior Rachel Butler (100 free and 200 breast) and junior Megan Van Berkom (200 free and 500 free) also picked up a pair of wins, while fifth-year senior Joy Zhu remained undefeated in the diving well as she swept both the 1- and 3-meter boards.
Freshman Ava Yablonski rounded out the Gopher winners by claiming first in the 200 fly.
After two straight meets at home, the Minnesota swimming and diving programs return to the road next Friday at Wisconsin. The meet is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and be streamed on B1G+.
