After we saw a Russian national record go down at the hands of Egor Kornev in the heats of the men’s 50m fly, tonight’s finals session at the country’s Short Course Championships brought us a new European Junior Record.
Racing in the final of the 200m IM, 17-year-old Mikhail Shcherbakov fired off a time of 1:52.75 to reap gold and down Olympic champion Hubert Kos‘ previous EJR.
Kos of Hungary set the former benchmark at 1:52.87, a time he produced at the 2021 European Short Course Championships to place 4th overall.
Shcherbakov managed to slice .12 off that effort to establish the new EJR, with the largest difference coming on the final 50m.
| Shcherbakov’s New 1:52.75 EJR | Kos’ Old 1:52.87 EJR |
| 24.84 | 24.03 |
| 28.07 | 27.75 |
| 33.21 | 33.49 |
| 26.63 | 27.60 |

Tonight, Maxim Stupin snagged the silver well behind in 1:54.42 while Alexey Sudarev bagged the bronze in 1:54.42. Sudarev still owns the Russian national record at the 1:52.13 he registered two years ago.
The Russian teen now ranks 5th in the world on the season.
