The 2025 Russian Short Course Nationals competition kicked off today from Kazan and already we’ve seen one senior national record bite the dust.
Racing in the heats of the men’s 50m butterfly, Egor Kornev ripped a lifetime best of 21.83 to capture the top seed.
21-year-old Kornev clocked the sole outing of the field under the 22-second barrier. The next-closest competitor was Oleg Kostin who touched in 22.28 followed by Roman Shevlyakov who hit 22.55 for the 3rd seed.
Kornev’s 21.83 result overtakes the former Russian national record of 22.07 Kostin put on the books at the 2019 edition of this competition. That means Kornev is now the first-ever Russian to dip under the 22-second threshold.
According to the World Aquatics database, Kornev is now the 7th-swiftest men’s SCM 50 fly performer in history.
