Michael Andrew takes 13-14 50 free NAG down to 19.76 at NASA Cup

Michaeal Andrew has lowered another National Age Group record at the NASA Junior National Cup meet in Clearwater, Florida. The 14-year-old went 19.76 at finals of the 50 free to take another tenth off his NAG in the event.

Andrew won the 15-16 event easily, and also put up the fastest overall time at the meet. Making things interesting was that Andrew swam the event immediately prior, the 200 breast, going a best time there as well.

Andrew went 1:59.63 in that 200 breast, his first time under two minutes. The 200 breast is the only short course NAG 200 yards or lower that Andrew doesn’t currently own, and that time puts him a lot closer than he was. The current 13-14 NAG is held by Reece Whitley, presumably at the 1:58.39 he went two weeks ago at a Junior Olympic meet, although that time doesn’t yet appear on the USA Swimming NAG records list.

The old 50 free NAG was 19.85, set back at the Jenks Sectional when Andrew became the first 14-year-old under 20 seconds.

Michael’s father is 6ft5 (and typically boys end up a few inches taller than than their dad). But more ominously perhaps is the fact that his mother is 6ft2, very tall for a woman. That suggest he’ll be taller than his father by some margin. We might well be talking about Matt Grevers and Arkady Vyatchanin height here by the time he’s finished sprouting.

That dude does not look like a 14 yr old child. He is bigger than I was at 22 while swimming in D1.

Michael’s last SCY meet before he turns 15 will be the NASA Showcase Classic in Clearwater in three weeks. He should have an interesting schedule then as he will also be entered in an LCM meet that weekend as well….two meets, same weekend, different size pools…..

It’s probably his last SCY meet before he turns 15 so he wants to go big.
And he goes big.
19.76!
Wow!
Impressive! Especially after a 200 breast.

I’m definitely keeping my eye on Burns. He is dropping time like a stone!

He was already close to the antic 1000 free NAG record.
He swam again very close to the 500 free NAG record. 4.17.97 vs 4.17.45.
His 1650 free is one to watch.

It doesn’t look like he has that big of feet or hands. Does anyone have inside knowledge of his shoe size? Could be a good indication of how much more he’ll grow..

This is nuts. The top level NCAA stars only perform above this level once a year and he is doing it every week.

But he is as big or even bigger than some of the top level NCAA stars already..

MA was bigger than anyone he raced at juniors with the exception of the breaststroker from Clovis. I’m not taking anything away from him, what he’s doing is amazing. I have been using race pace training with my club for almost 10 years. It works, but what he is doing has as much to do with his physical size and strength as his training.

So he’s big. As is Grevers. As is Dwyer. As was Phelps. Like in most sports, being big is useful. Why is this an issue? I have seen plenty of kids his size or bigger at 14 who weren’t nearly as good.

Reece Whitley is much bigger than him. So what?

Hulk.. people talk like he is a average size 14 year old… some guys who went much better (phelps Thorpe) were nowhere as tall or strong as him at 14.. and at 15.. Phelps was tall but not ripped.. and Thorpe destroyed the field on 400 free while still looking like a Teen.. MA looks like an Adult already.. he won´t probably keep improving at the same rate a teen would do for much longer..

Josh Davis, if you’re reading this which other two swimmers will you pick up to swim on your relays at winter nationals (Davis back, MA breast, ???? Fly and free) to represent team Indie? I’m only partially joking and would actually love to see this

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
