The final night of action at the 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships saw a British record go down at the hands of Tyler Melbourne-Smith.
Racing in the fastest heat of the men’s 800m freestyle, 20-year-old Melbourne-Smith of Loughborough ripped a big-time personal best of 7:33.56 to grab the gold.
Leading wire-to-wire, Melbourne-Smith beat the pack by nearly 13 seconds en route to registering the new British benchmark.
The former national record stood at the 7:36.26 Kieran Bird put on the books at the 2023 Scottish Championships, meaning Melbourne-Smith hacked over 2 seconds off that time to become the fastest British man in history.
Entering these championships, Melbourne-Smith’s lifetime best in this SCM 800 freestyle rested at the 7:39.37 notched at the 2024 edition of the competition. In a span of a year, therefore, the talented ace found a way to hack just under 6 seconds off that previous PB.
Splits for the Loughborough man’s breakthrough effort are below.

On day one of this meet, Melbourne-Smith ripped a career-swiftest performance of 3:36.09 to take the 400m freestyle gold, becoming GBR’s #2 performer of all time in the process.
