Melanie Costa Schmid Cracks World Top 10 In 800 Freestyle

After the first two days of competition in Barcelona at the 2015 Spanish National Championships, a handful of swimmers have made their way into the 2014-2015 World Rankings. The meet features age group championships as well as open age championships. The meet started on the 8th and continues through July 12th.

The most notable jump was made by Melanie Costa Schmid, the Spanish record holder in the 200 and 400 freestyle. Costa Schmid won the women’s 800 freestyle with the tenth fastest time in the world this year, 8:28.58. She is now one spot behind Mireia Belmonte in the world rankings. She was pushed the entire race by Maria Vilas Vidal, who finished second with a time of 8:30.61.

Costa Schmid was the only swimmer to move into the top 10 globally, but there were several other swimmers that had strong swims as well.

  • Judith Ignacio Sorribes won the women’s 200 butterfly with her time of 2:10.03.
  • Carlos Peralta Gallego won the men’s 200 butterfly with a 1:57.72.
