While competing on the final night of the 2023 Union Cup in his native Israel, Meiron Cheruti fired off a new national record in the men’s 50m freestyle.

25-year-old Cheruti clocked a time of 21.84 to hit a new lifetime best, shaving .03 off of his own previous Israeli standard of 21.87 logged at the 2019 Israeli Summer Championships.

Martin Kartavi earned silver behind Cheruti, posting a time of 22.59 to qualify for the inaugural U23 Championships in Dublin while Michael Poblayev rounded out the top 3 in 23.00 to qualify for the European Junior Championships

As for Cheruti, his effort not only dipped under the 22.12 World Aquatics ‘A’ standard needed to qualify for this summer’s World Championships, but his new record also cleared the standard for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Olympic Qualification Time sits at 22.07 so Cheruti beat that mark with time to spare.

Cheruti now ranks 5th in the world this season.

…surely this is the most sub-22s that have happened by April 23rd of any given year, right?

Hard to tell cuz USA swimming system sucks, swimswam lacks exact time periods, and Fina misses a lot of meets.

World aquatics says we have 14 guys this year so far. Obviously not right but they generally include the same meet results each year. Remember, as the years get older, world aquatics has fewer times in the database. Here is what they say for the same time periods in other years:
2022: 11
2021: 14
2020: 10
2019: 13
2018: 12 (even with commonwealth games)
2017: 10
2016: 11
2015: 8
2014: 10
2013: 9
2012: 13
2011: 2
2010: 0
2009: 0
2008: 3
2007: 3
2006: 0
Data not there
1990: 2 (the first two ever, biondi and jager)
