McIntosh Propels Canada To Rank Third In World Championships Medal Table

2025 World Championships

Day five of the 2025 World Championships saw 18-year-old phenom Summer McIntosh of Canada reap her 3rd gold in the past 5 days.

Tonight, McIntosh dominated the women’s 200m butterfly event, stopping the clock at 2:01.99 to fall just .18 outside the longstanding World Record of 2:01.81 China’s Li Zige put on the books during the 2009 World Cup.

McIntosh looked visibly disappointed after this evening’s race, despite the swimmer having thrown down the 2nd-fastest performance in history, as well as a Canadian and Commonwealth Record.

Her gold tonight is added to the 400m freestyle and 200m IM golds the teen has already collected at this competition. The Canadian still has the 800m free and 400m IM yet to come in her quest to secure five golds when all is said and done.

Canada now ranks 3rd in the overall swimming medal table, situated behind leader Australia and current runners-up United States, with just three days of action yet to come.

At the 2023 World Championships, Canada placed 6th in the swimming medal table, amassing a total of 6 medals spread evenly at 2 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronze. Last year at the less-attended World Championships in Doha, the nation placed 13th with a total of 7 medals.

With that in mind, Canada is on track to potentially achieve its best result ever, as we await the final days of action to unfold in Singapore.

It was such outright ignorant garbage that Summer wanted 800 freestyle the most. Rowdy was saying it and even the CBC swimming people, who should know better, were saying it.

That race is the fan focus. Summer was obsessed with 200 butterfly. That was blatantly obvious based on her family history and everything she said at Canadian trials, including her social media aftermath, especially the short lived Instagram stories.

This final was agonizing because Summer knew she was close. Unlike Canadian trials she hit every wall near perfectly, which is absolutely paramount to take down that record.

I wasn’t surprised at her reaction at all. She knows she only gets so many chance at that 2:01

What was the social media aftermath?

Yeah, her mom cheered, but her sister looked so frustrated for her and her dad did for a second too. They must know just how badly she wants it.
I actually do think she’ll be very upset if she gets silver in the 800 though — 5 golds is so important to her and her stepping stone to LA.

Wonder if trials had been at Toronto Pan Am pool and not Victoria if she would have broken it then.

I’d pretty well guarantee it .Its a real fast pool and one of her favourites.Trials is usually packed with screaming age group swimmers who create a great atmosphere and she can stay in her own house instead of a hotel. If Swim Canada were smart they would make the pool the permanent home of trials.A great pool, tons of deck space, and spectator seating, good warm up pool, etc..Its also centrally located, lowering the cost of attending for all the swimmers. Many of the swimmers can just drive there.Hey Swim Canada …get it done.

Couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately Swim Canada never does the smart thing. Look at the entry lists for the SC championships in Sherbrooke, they can’t even bribe swimmers with World Cup qualification and carding requirements.

I was disappointed with her post-race antics. I get the frustration, but she has a lot to be happy about, especially in light of this meet. Imagine how crushing it would be if someone like Ledecky did the same.

Summer is a teenager (a very mature one at that. There’s nothing wrong with her showing frustration. I doubt you would criticize a male football player for these kind of “antics”

If you feel it would be crushing if Ledecky did that get a spine.

You bring up some good points, as Summer said in an interview she was racing the 800 free largely because it fit in best with her schedule. She seemed more focused on 200 back than 800 free 6 months ago. Since Tokyo Olympics, I have only seen Summer race the 800 in one small meet once per year.
But that 200 fly WR is definitely coming.♡

You are correct in your assessment regarding the importance of the 200 fly in Summer wanting to break that 16 year old world record. In terms of challenges it is right at the top of her list.

However I would say that the 800 free has to be almost on equal terms with breaking the 200 fly record but for different reasons.

We are talking about racing the iconic Katie Ledecky in arguably her most dominant event. It’s the only race this week that McIntosh, at her best could conceivably lose.

Fred Vergnoux was quoted as saying “ Summer wants to go against the master of this race”.

Canada could end up with 6 golds in theory, if Summer wins the 800 (and 400 IM obviously) and Liendo wins the 100 fly.

I think the US is the favorite for the 4×200 free relay, but there’s a few too many unknowns as to health status for me to move it to likely at this point. The M and W 50 free are not as much of a lock as the 200 back for AUS so one or both of those could go in an unexpected direction. I don’t think it will take a world record to win the 1500 and Finke’s 800 wasn’t a total disaster, so it’s not impossible he wins. But I think that’s a real… Read more »

I’m surprised no one is talking more about liend’s split in the mixed medley the other day. Did went 49.mid off a flying start.

Yeah over all I feel like there wasn’t much discussion on how Canada pulled off that bronze! I thought we were for sure out of all relay medals! The kid breastroker, Liendo didn’t seem to be in form at trials so he was a question, RUCK pulling a 52 split (I think?)

With Tierney on back, Kharun on fly,Liendo on free and the kid Dawson on breast ,how will they do in 4 x 100 medley.Do they have a shot??

A bloody brutal reality check for Aquatics GBs new leadership team. We’ll do well to come away with more than a single medal this week and it can not be put down to illness – Lots of PBs, we are just miles off the pace in most events.

The positive news is that the signs are positive for the future. Men’s backstroke looks secured for the next Olympic cycle, we have three men swimming 59s in the 100br (two of them just 17 years old) with Peaty returning to join them in 2026, men’s fly looks weak at the top but the teenagers Brown, Fearn and Finch look way above average and *should* take us up a notch in… Read more »

This is just GB reverting to it’s natural level.

Totally disagree with the idea of a “natural level” – Ebbs and flows, yes, but GB pre-2000 was abnormally poor due to complete lack of infrastructure, opportunities and funding.

We are in a transition, much like France and Germany a few years ago, but it is brutal timing for the new leadership team. There is hope on the horizon, but the rebuild will not be easy.

I still think the USA are the favourites especially with Australia having no Titmus, Williamson, ZSC, McKeon retiring, and now both Short and Wunsch are sick. The USA is not the only country that is fighting uphill battles!

It’d be even more remarkable if Canada ends up with more golds than the US!

Not really at all. SwimSwam predicted USA to win the medal table by 9, 15-6. So far there have been arguably 2 golds that USA might have won but missed because of sickness.

USA winning is still very expected, and the sickness has barely impacted the gold medal count.
