“Mama is Back in the Water”: Sarah Sjöström Returns To The Pool Six Weeks After Giving Birth

One month and two weeks after giving birth to her son, Adrian, Swedish Olympic champion Sarah Sjöström is back in the pool. The new mother shared a video on Instagram on October 6th.

Her Instagram post was posted with the caption “Mama is back in the water! 🏊🏼‍♀️😍

Sjöström and her partner Johan de Jong Skierus welcomed their son on August 26th. Sharing the memorable experience of giving birth just outside of the hospital driveway in Södersjukhuset. She described the birth as “traumatic and magical”.

The post showed her first time back in the pool, having waited six weeks to avoid the risk of potential infection.

Now, just over a month later, Sjöström is easing back into swimming, continuing what she’s described as a new, personal chapter of discovery. When she first announced her pregnancy earlier this year, she said her long-term goal wasn’t just about chasing medals, but about finding out what her body could do after pregnancy.

In that announcement back in February, she reaffirmed her desire to compete for a sixth Olympic qualification in Los Angeles in 2028 after giving birth, saying her “dream is to compete at the LA 2028 Olympics and make it to my sixth Olympic Games.”

Sjöström’s most recent Olympic appearance was golden, winning both the women’s 50 and 100 free at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the second and third Olympic titles of her career, following her win in the women’s 100 fly in Rio in 2016.

In addition to her Olympic success, Sjöström also boasts 20 world championship golds. Her absence from the 2025 world championships ended her winning streaks in the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly.

Sjöström is still the world record holder in the long course 50 and 100 freestyles, and 50 butterfly.

With her reintroduction to the water, Sjöström is now taking her first steps back into a potential record breaking sixth Olympic appearance.

50s are piss. Wouldnt surprise if she gets heaps more titles. Would be more impressive if she did real events like OW and 400 medley

Buddy, this might be the dumbest take of all time, and I would know. I don’t love the 50’s but Sarah is one of the GOAT.

absolutely she is the goat and she could goat the shit out of anyone in any 50m from here to timbuktu. absolute piss events. my neighbour played ten pin bowls professionally and never swam in their life until last week and did a 23 50 free this morning.

Aquajosh

She’s also the defending Olympic champion and World Record holder in the 100m free, swam a 200 free that pushed Katie Ledecky to a time she hasn’t replicated since to take Olympic silver, and swam a 4:06.0 for funsies in the 400m free in her second (and final) time ever swimming it in 2014.

She has nothing to prove to anyone.

was just saying that my neighbour was a ten pin CHAMPION in the 90s and never swam a lap until last week. i think they did some red cross swim work when they were on camp. but point is they got in this morning and did a 50m from a dive in 23. long course of course.

To nobody in particular:

The trolling here is very weak, isn’t it?

the only thing weaker is a 50 butterfly in the AMERICA olympics

Dan

What about cricket and netball in 2032! That is as brilliant as Flag football in 2028

Dan

Had so many questions, comments, numbers etc to post here but a video with a running clock of him swimming the 50 is enough.

Dan

She did swim a little longer events through her early 20’s. In 2014 she did 4.06.0 in a none taper meet in March and finished 2014 ranked 14th in the world in the 400 Free. The number 2 person in the world that year was a 4.03.2

Probably but I don’t think she can touch the 50 free record

I wonder if Enhanced Games recruiters have tried to lure Sjostrom away from swimming.. she would be the perfect candidate for them I reckon

I would quit being a swim fan and coach if that happened.

that’s a given, considering her program aligns perfectly with the events EG offers, and the womens swimmer they actually managed to recruit is not of the same calibre as sjostrom

Since her goal is to swim in at least 1 more Olympics I don’t think a $2million sign on bonus would be in the ballpark, $20million still probably not, $100million sign on – I don’t know, she has very strong integrity but $100million is a lot of money.
