Maggie MacNeil wasted no time showing her speed at the Art Adamson Invitational–her first taper meet as an LSU Tiger. In the first event of the meet, the women’s 200 free relay, she split 20.59. That’s the 11th fastest split in history, and makes her the 7th fastest performer.

Fastest All-Time 50 Free Splits Performers

  1. Anna Hopkin (2020) – 20.27
  2. Simone Manuel (2018)/Abbey Weitzeil – 20.45
  3. Kate Douglass (2022) – 20.54
  4. Erika Brown (2020) – 20.57
  5. Gretchen Walsh (2022) – 20.58
  6. Maggie MacNeil (2022) – 20.59
  7. Arianna Vanderpool Wallace (2012) – 20.80
  8. Maggie Meyer (2010) – 20.81
  9. Kylee Alons (2021) – 20.82
  10. Kelsi Dahlia (2016) – 20.84

This is MacNeil’s fastest split by a considerable margin. When she swam for Michigan, she often led off the 200 free relay, thus she didn’t get many opportunities to show off her 50 free with a relay start. She helped LSU to a third place finish, teaming with Katarina Milutinovich, Peyton Curry, and Michaela De Villiers to post 1:27.63. They finished .25 behind the winning USC team, and .07 behind Alabama.

Later in this session, MacNeil will race the individual 50 free, where she is the top seed after her 20.86 in prelims. That prelims swim lowered her season-best by .04 and maintains her spot at #2 in the NCAA this season (behind Gretchen Walsh‘s 21.16). With that swim, she also lowered her LSU school record, which she set at a dual meet against South Carolina.

Based on the speed she’s shown in her first swim of the meet, keep an eye out for her to improve on that time later in the session. Her lifetime best in the event is 21.17, which she swam to place second at 2021 NCAAs.
