Talk about going out on top.

That was certainly the case for Bend High School senior Maddie Thornton, who made her last high school meet a historic one before embarking on a college career at Georgia.

Thornton broke two overall state records at the Oregon School Activities Association 5A State Swimming Championships, setting new records in the 200 IM and 100 back.

A 5A state record was also broken by Bend senior Emma Bronson. Thanks to those performances, the Bend girls’ team won its fourth straight state title. On the boys’ side, there was also a record-breaking performance by Summit senior Brecken Egeland, who set a new state record in the 200 free.

Thurston won the team title, earning its first- ever state championship.

Girls’ Recap

In the 200 IM, Thornton clocked a time of 1:57.28, breaking the old record of 1:58.95 set in 2016 by Keaton Blovad of Lakeridge.

In the 100 back, Thornton touched the wall first in a personal best 53.10, breaking the old record of 53.71 set by Emily Cook of Jesuit in 2017.

“I definitely was putting pressure on myself,” Thornton said to the OSAA website. “But it was just a matter of walking in and fine-tuning the details. I’m really happy I was able to do it my senior year. That makes it really special.”

Thornton ended up a four-time champion in the 100 back and a three-time champion in the 200 IM.

Bronson, who has committed to Alabama, broke her own record in the 100 fly, clocking a time of 54.20 to best the old record time of 54.95 she set at last year’s state meet. Bronson also captured the 200 free in a personal best of 1:52.47.
