Luka Mijatovic, 16, continues to rewrite the NAG Record Books, and he dropped even more time tonight, swimming a massive 14:30.01 in the boys’ 1650 at the 2025 California/Nevada December Sectionals meet to take seven seconds off his own NAG record time.

The 16-year-old Texas commit from the Pleasanton Seahawks has been on a tear over the last few months, and in one event over the weekend, he has already shattered a NAG Record. He set the former record of 14:37.63 back in April, breaking Liam Custers 2020 record of 14:37.86 by just two tenths.

In April, Mijatovic was out fast, splitting 52-mids over the first 400 yards. Tonight, he was out a smidge slower in the 52-high range, but he held on better, splitting 52s and 53s over the entire race with no 54-second splits.

Mijatovic’s swim was less than half-a-second off the 17-18 NAG record in the event of 14:29.48 set by Luke Ellis in 2023. On top of being the fastest 15-16-year-old in the event in history, Mijatovic’s time would also rank 2nd in the NCAA so far this season, with only Zalan Sarkany‘s 14:23.85 from the Ohio State Invite coming in ahead of him.

He also swam the 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle relays after his mile. In the 200 free relay, he split 19.79 in the 2nd leg and in the 800 free rela,y he was 1:34.23 on the lead-off leg, about a second off his lifetime best of 1:33.52.

He is entered in the 200 free, 400 IM, 200 fly, 500 free, 100 free, 1000 free, and 200 IM over the next two days of the meet.

Goes to show what further potential is still untapped above water.

I remember how ridiculous I thought that 14:37 from Custer was a few years ago. He just completely obliterated this standard.

I hope so, but thus far by comparison, ABSOLUTELY not.

Can he just be himself and not the next (some previous guy)?

Thorpe was like 3:41 at his age in a brief

My Son Is Also Called Bort

To add even more context, when Thorpe went 3:41.8, the next best all time performers were 3:43.8, 3:45, 3:46 and 3:46.7

So by that argument, Luka would have to rip a 3:37 next time he swims lol

If Luka keeps it low-key for himself, he could throw down a time like that after some years under Bowman.
