Reed Fujan will join the Virginia coaching staff for the upcoming 2026-2027 season as an associate head coach. Fujan most recently spent time at Louisville as an associate head coach.
“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Reed Fujan to our program,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “Reed has built an outstanding reputation at Louisville as both a coach and a recruiter, and his passion for developing elite swimmers is exactly what we look for on our staff. He shares the same values and commitment to excellence that have helped us build this program into what it is today. Our student-athletes are going to benefit tremendously from his experience, and I think he’s going to fit in seamlessly with our culture here at Virginia. We can’t wait to get to work.”
Fujan was hired as an associate head coach at fellow ACC program Louisville back in 2023. Louisville has been one of the top NCAA programs in recent years and the women were 8th at the 2026 NCAA Championships while the men were 12th. The Louisville women notably beat the Virginia women in the 200 medley at the 2026 ACC Championships, but the Virginia women went on to win the event at 2026 NCAAs.
During his tenure, he helped the Cardinals earn 49 All-American honors, and the women finished in the top eight at NCAAs during all three seasons he was with the program, while the men finished in the top 15.
Prior to his stint at Louisville, Fujan was an associate head coach at Alabama. During his time with Alabama, Fujan helped coach the women’s program to their highest finish in program history as the team was 4th at the 2022 NCAA Championships with 288 points.
Fujan began his coaching career in 2017 as a volunteer with Indiana before going on to be the head coach at Division III St. John’s during the 2018-2019 season. He graduated from Notre Dame back in 2017 and served as co-captain on the swim team during his senior season. He grew up in Byron, Minnesota.
Fujan fills the position that was previously held by Jake Shrum who left Virginia last month. The Virginia women are coming off of their 6th straight NCAA team title while the men are coming off of a 9th place finish at NCAAs, led by freshman Maximus Williamson who swam to two NCAA titles.
He said “I want to thank Todd DeSorbo and the staff for the opportunity to be part of one of the best programs in the world. From the outside, it’s clear this team knows how to work hard and have fun, and that balance seems to be a big part of their success. I’m excited to get to Charlottesville and get to work. Go Hoos!”

The only one nice dude at Louisville
I have swam against Reed at club swimming in Minnesota. He seems like a nice guy and good for this job!
Congrats Reed. Great addition to the UVA staff. Todd must be happy again
Do we know why Jake Shrum left?
Seen this movie before as well. Not impressed.
When you reed a book, do you get a sense of Fujan?
ASU got someone to fill the slot previously held by Salo?
Great hire, a talented coach and a good person!
