27-year-old Lewis Clareburt of New Zealand earned silver the men’s 200m IM early on at the 2026 Commonwealth Games but the Kiwi upgraded to gold in a stunning performance during last night’s men’s 200m fly final.
Turning 6th at the 50m, situated 7th at the 100m but closing in 29.92, Clareburt’s unconventional race plan paid off against Aussie national record holder Harrison Turner and Olympian Matthew Temple.
Clareburt claimed gold in 1:55.05 to Turner’s silver medal-earning 1:55.38 and Temple’s bronze medal-worthy 1:55.45.
Clareburt’s podium-topping performance represented New Zealand’s first gold across any sport at these Commonwealth Games.
Reflecting on his tactics, Clareburt told the media post-race, “I’ve got no words. I felt like I could run through a brick wall at the end of the race. I couldn’t believe I was gaining on Harry.
“I just knew that he was the benchmark, and if I was next to him or in front of him, leading into that last 50m, then I was going to be in the hunt.
“I’m pretty actually surprised at those splits. Honestly, I was like, I felt like I was so slow out and I just knew that I was going to have enough left to take that 75 and I just never really hit the wall and I had to really rate it up.
“There’s no way I can redo that race again.”
Clareburt snagged the top seed in the men’s 400m IM on day five to give him another opportunity to grab the gold for New Zealand.
