Krasnykh Stands as Lone Olympic Qualifier on Day 1 of Russian Trials

2016 RUSSIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS / OLYMPIC TRIALS

Just one swimmer came away with an Olympic Qualification on day 1 of the 2016 Russian Championships, but that’s not as disappointing as it might sound.

For the sprint-happy Russians, day 1 was dominated by distance, and the one qualifier came in a shocking swim. Alekdandr Krasnykh swam a 3:47.30 in the men’s 400 free, which submarined the selection standard of 3:48.27. Krasnykh had never been faster than 3:50 in that event, including in prelims where he was just 3:54.

Day 2 should see more activity for Olympic qualifying. 20-year old Svetlana Chimrova was easily under the selection standard in the 100 fly with a 57.91, and if she can come close to repeating that swim in finals, she too will have her place for Rio.

Russian Olympic Qualifiers – After Day 1

  1. Aleksandr Krasnykh, Tatarstan, 400 free, 3:47.30 (standard: 3:48.27)

Nice, long freestyle that of Krasnykh.
Clearly more 200 than 400 freestyler, considering today 3.47.3 in the 400, he could dip under 1.46 in 200 free.
