Katie Ledecky on 1500 Free: “Fun to swim a 15:25 and not be surprised by it”

2026 Speedo Fort Lauderdale Open

Katie Ledecky got things rolling in Ft Lauderdale in the most Katie Ledecky way possible: clocking the 5th fastest time ever in the 1500 Free with a 15:25.62. Last year at this pool, Ledecky was a 15:24, which surprised many, including herself.

This year, however, Ledecky was confident she’d be right around this time, saying that she has carried the momentum from this meet last year into her training and racing since. A Katie Ledecky with this much confidence, casually rolling off 15:20-mids in season, could be pretty scary come Pan Pacs in August.

15:20s is so insane. It is consistently close to top male times in the event. I wonder if she raced against some slightly faster males if that would help push her to a new WR? Maybe Katie should be granted an exemption at these smaller meets to race the guys.

Ledecky swimming fast in season means nothing for her tapered meets, as she does not taper well.so no, this means nothing we dont know

Let’s be honest, she could be scary at any meet, not specifically Pan Pacs. Last year she swam the fastest precisely this weekend and in this pool

I think she peaks for her meets in general. Not that she doesn’t taper well, but she does a training block that includes a taper for all meets.

The most boring race around. One swimmer dominates and no one else competes in it.

I’m fairly confident the others were going as hard as they could. Give them some credit!

And pasting the same rage bait over and over again is not boring?

Yeh man! And another thing, that third period in hockey, get rid of it, their too slow and tired at the end of games. The last half in basketball… snoozefest!!!! Make diving elimination dives and you only get 3 dives max!

Is this what the next generation of swimmers honestly think or just a troll/ragebait? Hope it’s the latter

I thought you were being sarcastic until the diving idea. Now I think you might be serious and I have to agree with you.

I don’t think that the end of a basketball game is boring, so let’s keep that but eliminate the middle 10-15 min of each half, that is the boring part to me. In baseball I think we eliminate inning 3-7

I don’t either, it was a sarcastic response to a hot take on 1500m being boring.

I could t think of any other good responses, didn’t have my coffee yet

We actually don’t deserve her. When she retires, Team USA is going to feel that loss heavily

As an Aussie looking in I am sure she does a lot more for team USA than just bring home medals, she is clearly inspirational, motivational and an absolute icon that every young female on the team can lean on and learn from with their own athletic journey. Undoubtedly the GOAT, and will be very difficult for anyone else to replicate just how important her role is once she’s retired.

Not enough superlatives in the English language to adequately describe this phenomenal Woman 🙌.

Agree totally. She is amazing. I think she is opening up more now in interviews too which makes a difference. Much better than the lead up to 2021. Mind you, she was entitled to her privacy.

Who says she’s going to retire (soon) ? I say odds on Brisbane are 50/50 at worst.

From 35 min to the end, basically say that she is not sure when she will be done with competitive racing, but leaning towards LA being the last Olympics
